Tlaltechutli (pronounced Tlal-teh-koo-tlee) is the goddess of the Earth, said to represent the surface of the planet which devours the sun every night, only to give it back the next day. She is angry and fierce, requiring lots of human sacrifices to keep her content. Her name means ‘the one who gives and devours life’.
