It’s the best (and yummiest) time of the year. It’d be easy to knock ourselves into a food coma every day until 2019, but we can’t let that happen! To help us out, we asked our favorite fitness gurus, Karena Dawn and Katrina Scott, how they stay fit during the holidays. Here’s what they said:

Katrina: We're Karena and Katrina, trainers, best friends, and co-founders of Tone It Up. Tone It Up is a fitness, nutrition, and lifestyle community that helps women connect and empower each other to live their healthiest and happiest lives.

The holidays can be stressful for a lot of people; worrying about finances, last minute shopping, spending time with family and of course, ALL THE FOOD. Do you have any tips for our hearters on how to get your mindset right and set yourself up for success before the holiday season?

Karena: Set yourself up for success first thing in the morning! We like to get our workout in early before the day gets too hectic — especially during this busy time of year. That way, we have more energy throughout the day, feel balanced, and have more time to spend with our loved ones after work. There’s a lot of debate around finding balance during the holidays. Should we just relax, eat whatever we want and lounge around with our families or should we stick to our workout routines and stay away from the festive treats. What’s your opinion on this and how do you apply it to your own life?

Katrina: The joy of the holidays is spending time with our loved ones, relaxing, and having some amazing treats too! The key is finding a healthy balance between sticking to your goals and enjoying the festivities. For us, we both like to get our workouts in first thing in the morning. We'll schedule a fitness class or do the Daily Moves in the Studio Tone It Up app or plan a yoga date together.

When we go to holiday parties and we want a drink or two, we usually reach for wine, champagne, or a cocktail with fresh ingredients like muddled berries. And we pick our favorite treats to enjoy. I'm a sweets girl and Karena loves a good cheese plate!

So, say we had the best intentions going into the holiday season; we were planning on sticking with healthy options, being active and sticking to our goals. One thing lead to the other and you ended up indulging a bit more than you would have liked. What can we do now?

  • Add a spoonful of apple cider vinegar and a splash of cayenne to your water. This will help your tummy feel better and get your alkalinity balanced.
  • Get in a toning session after a holiday dinner or party. Your muscles are full of energy (aka glycogen) from your dinner. You’ll be surprised by how strong you’ll feel during a workout.
  • Ask someone in your family to join you for a long walk, hike, or bike ride. Any type of cardio will help you feel energized, light, and refreshed!

What is one thing you struggle with the most during the holidays, and how have you overcome that struggle?

Karena: This time of year, everyone has a jam-packed schedule and a lot of commitments, which can feel stressful. It's so important for all of us to take some time for ourselves and practice self-care. I like to schedule a night in to unwind with a bubble bath, a face mask, a good book, and a homemade healthy dinner.

And, probably the most important question… What’s your favorite holiday treat that makes it so hard to say “no”? Do you have a healthy alternative?
