Hello everyone,
Today I want focusing on an important topic.
I know school just started from a while, it's just I don't have so much time to write article during week.
By the way I can't wait to discuss about school, college and university. I love studying, even if I'm not a swot!

This article is for everyone: students (from elementary to university), people that are choosing in which university study, people that are choosing to studying or start working etc...

I know that "College" is used by Americans to talk about studies after High school, instead English people use "University". That's why you'll read sometimes "College" and other times "University". I'm italian, so my english is not perfect. In italy we have "Collegio" and "Università" that are two type of different schools.
"Università" is the classical "University or College", insead "Collegio" is a school where you can sleep and eat in there. (Like Hogwards from Harry Potter"

Now, after I said everything for the introduction, I can start.

How to study in classroom

Probably you are fed up to read or listen to that... But the first thing to do is

Listen to the teacher

Sometimes books are difficult to understeand. Listen to the explanation of the teacher can make the differece.

If you're a nervous and anxiuos type (like me) I know it's difficult mantain the concentration in classroom. As my advice buy a stress-ball and squish it, or use a chewing gum (but don't make you discovered by teachers).

I sure you're also tired to listen to the next advice

Take notes during lesson

The teachers always say more things than books, and in a esiest way. Sometimes they reassume topics (that in books are maybe formed by three or four pages) and sometimes they step to step explain a topic (that in the books you'll find confusing). That's the most important reason you must take notes in classroom.

By the way, writing while listening improve your attention and makes you memorize better. It's like you're doing half of work at school instead of start from zero at home (that require more time and it's more difficult)

I know in the university is different. Before it you attend the high school and teachers (usually) are more understeanding. They help you and give you the opportunity for a lot of time to make up a bad mark.
In the university (or better here in Italy) you have got lessons, but the work you must do by yourself. You know why?
If you won't pass an exam the teacher won't help you. You must repeat it in time or you will fail the year.

If the teachers speak fast, and you can't take all the notes use a recording. I prefer use one aside instead of my mobile phone. They are cheap and you don't use the memory of you're mobile

Other important and expected point is

Raise your hand if you don't understeand something

For stupid things, important things,... For inquisitiveness or anything. Don't be afraid to do that. If ther's someone that are laughing it's stupid and don't listent to. Sometimes in classroom people want to ask, but they're tooo shy to do that. You are the one who can break the ice.
Teacheras will notice you're interested in their lesson and trust me... Thay will consider it in future ;)

This one you will listen less than the others...

Take your seat in a place where you're comfortable

As you know, you can decide where you can sit. I always hated the first row. I have never been concentrated in there. I prefer the third row, if possible near the window or the wall, as I can feel confortable and protected. I could concentrated better and listen more to the teacher. It's not a rule that you must sit in the first row if you want good marks and it's not a rule you're the worste if you choose the last row. It's your choice.
You can't concentrate if you're feel uncomfortable.

As important as the desk there's the person sitting next to you. Friends are important, but if they make you distract from lessons you'd better sitting in another place. Personally I prefer sitting alone, away from everybody, because I have the power to speak with walls. By the way classrooms are often organized in ways that you are obligted to sit near other people. As my advice you should sit next quiete people or smart one.

At home

Now it comes the hard work. Can I ask you a question? Do you know which type of memory your brain use (more than the others) when need to memorize things?

Know your memory

We have several memories. The short-term one, sensitive one, long-term one, visive one, tactile one...
But when we study we apply just one (or for the luckliest two). The memories are four:
1- The visive memory (usually the most common)
2- The aural memory
3- The operative memory
4- The iconic memory

I'm going to explain to you how these memories works and how to apply them.

Visive memory

The visive memories works with images and pictures. When you're having an oral test and the teachers asking you something if you have the visive memory you will answer to the question thinking about the colours or the pictures of the interested page. The visive memory works well in a lot of life topic. For school could be penalized, but if you well apply it, it could be a strenght point.

Advices for studying:

1- Use different type of highlighters. You can divide them into paragraph and topics, or use different colour for names, dates, important things, things didn't understeand, important words etc...
2- Work with flash cards. If it's possible use different colour of paper
3- When you're listening to the teacher try to observe well his/her behavior and how he's/she's dressed
4- Observe the images of your books
5- while you're re-writing important things, use different colours, pens and characters

The aural memory

As a first impact the aural memory can seem unuseful. Instead can be very important. If you memorize concept easily by listening to the teacher or remember almost everything listening to the news in TV, well you'll probably have a strong aural memory.

Advices to study:
1- Listen to the teacher. It's important for everyone, but in particular for those who have this memory
2- While studying, read and repeat loudly. The better way for you to memorize
3- Record your voice when you repeat the lesson, and then listen to it again
4- Try to look for on line videos of the topic you're studying
5- During oral tests listen to your classmates. This is very helpful.

The Operative memory

The operative memory is quiete complex. In this cirlce of people the memory works different. It is not based on the five senses, but on the work that you make. People with this type of memoried applied in stdy must write down several summuries of the lessons. They must write and read a lot.

Advices to study

1- Make a lot of summuries
2- Rewrite everything when you finished to study
3- Read alone in silence. Don't speak while reading
4- You must study alone, in silence or with sounds that can help you concentrate (For example the sounds of water, fire, rain, wind, storm, classical music or my favorite: the sound of voices in a café)
5- Probably your flaw is memorizing names and dates. If you don't have any other memory combined with it (like the visive one) write names and dates near them repeating loudly why they're important.

Your memory can be subjec of the short-term memory. The explanation to avoid it is written down below. Don't worry.

The Iconic memory
Another type of particular memory. It is very helpful when you must remember names, strange words, dates etc... It isn't helpful if you need to remember... Pages and pages. You'll just remember names, dates and strange words.

Advices to study

1- Don't focus on names and words, but on the context.
2- Make flashcards contrary to the original one. Instead of write names and dates on it, write the context and link it to the names and the dates.
3- Repeat a lot.
4- Use different color for people and dates, highlighting what they made of important with the same colour of the name. Highlight what was important in that period with the same color of the dates. Highlight what's the meaning with the same colour used for the strage words. You understeand?
5- Make a lots of mind maps

How works the short-term and the long-term memories

When we study we all use the short-term memory. We use normally both memories. First we use the short-one. It can catch few but important information and we keep them in mind for a short period of time. To transform the memory into the long one we need to apply the five senses to the information.
That's why we need to read outload, repeat, use flashcards, watch carefully the images, etc

Study in an organized or disorganized place

Yes, there are differences. It depends on you and what you have to do.
You probably think I am stupid but... Believe me. If you need inspiration or you need power and a motivation to do homework a little bit of mess can help you (unless you love work in a tidy place).
But when you need to study,... It's better put on your desk just the things you need for study.

Little things that can help you

1- Blue pen improve your concetration (it is confirmed by some studies)

2- Put a plant or a photo of a tree on your desk. While studying watch it. It will hep you to mantain low energy of stress. (It's a method used by some Japanese people, it's name is "Shirin-yoku")

3- Be careful how you sit on the chair. Have a good attidude with your body first, your mind will follow

4- Have a bottle of water on the desk. If you don't drink while studying you'll have a terrible headache

5- Don't put too much stuff on the desk, even if you have to study a lot. Brain is lazy and because it doesn't want to work it will try to manipulate you. How? It will makes you feel nervous, tired or anxious.

6- Black pen improve your creativity

7- Study in a place where there is no confusion and where there is stuffy air.

8- Remember to have a break of 10 minutes after 20-30 minutes of studying

Apps that can help you

As my advice when you study you must turn off your mobile phone. By the way some people must have their mobile phone on and pay attention of it for any reasons. (My parents always call me even if I'm studying and if don't answer I have to fight with the everytime). The problem is that the telephone can be a big distractions while studying.
What kind of solution can we afford?
Transform your telephone into an object to study.

Here I have some helpful apps

Simple mind free (build your own mental map)

Coffitivity (sounds of people that are talking into a café, I don't know why it helps me concentrate)

Flashcards (useful to studying on train and bus)

Notebloc (take photo or screenshots and this app will transform them into pdf format)

Beelinguapp (to talk with other people, helpful to learn a language)

Tandem (the same of Beelinguapp)

Forest (to help you study and mantain concentration)

Relaxio (a mix of sounds to help you concentrate... It's different from coffitivity)

Focus (the same as Relaxio, the difference is that you can impost time in Focus)
