How to "glow up"

Hi it’s Janayah, today I'll be writing a guide to ‘glowing up’

Let's get started!

The first step of "glowing up" is not what you would initially think of it's far from; applying natural products to your eyebrows to make them grow, using hair masks or purchasing a certain products from an expensive company to make all your blemishes go away etc.

"Glowing up" is all about self love. Loving yourself for who you are, what makes you unique, what makes you tick, even your likes and dislikes. Self love can take months or years but there are many ways to practice self love.

At the end of the day "glowing up" is a just a phrase and concept, please remember that whilst reading this article these tips are to make you feel good about yourself, different methods to take care of yourself and boost your confidence.

Aim to get seven to eight hours of sleep a night

Drink lots of water, fresh juices and green tea. Staying hydrated with help to cleanse toxins from the body it also promotes healthy skin

Slowly begin to remove large portions of junk food from your diet

Work out regularly whenever it's taking a walk, going to the gym for a few hours or even a home workout

Exfoliating the skin too often can lead to; redness, irritation and sensitivity. Aim to exfoliate two to three times a week

Using a face mask weekly improves the appearance of your pores and removes excess oils

Instead of popping your pimples, use a spot treatment, rubbing alcohol and tea tree oil

Wash or change your pillowcases once a week

Mediation has many benefits; increased focus, reduced stress, increased creativity and much more

To remove scars on the face, I would recommend bio oil, blackhead strips or any effective black head removal products/ techniques

To enhance your eyebrows within two weeks apply castor, almond and coconut oils every night. Vaseline is also a great alternative

Find a skincare routine that suits your skin type, then invest in products and stick to the regime daily. You will start to see the results a few days after the first use

The five different skin types:

- Dry skin - the skin appears to be dull and lifeless

- Oily skin - the skin secures the natural oils for nourishment

- Sensitive skin - People with this skin type may have conditions. Such as, acne, rosacea or contact dermatitis, a type of red itchy rash. It's common that burning and stinging come easily to people with this skin type

- Combination skin - This skin type means "you are dry in winter and oily in summer"

- Normal skin - Normal skin is know to be skin that can tolerate most things without the skin reacting

step 1: take a look at the clothes you own

After having a look at your closet try and determine the kind of clothes you prefer as a stepping stone

step 2: create a collection of clothes that you wear regularly, separating from the clothes you don't wear as often

Take a step back and assess what those clothes have in common:
do they have a similar print?

Are they leaning more towards lighter coloured shades or a contrast with black and greys?
Is there a specific brand that the clothes have in common?

step 3: searching for inspiration

Once you have determined what your clothes have in common, you will now know what kind of clothes you prefer. Now it's time for the fun part!! I would definitely recommend having a look at the people you look up to, search what their kind of fashion is like, they are already part of your inspiration.

Dig deep into old movies, runway shows, Instagram, Pinterest, Weheartit and Tumblr. These platforms are great in general, they are also good for stumbling across hidden gems of inspiration. Compile pictures of items and fashion that you feel you would like to recreate in some way, inspire you or just generally like. From there create a collection/ mood board of these pictures.

step 4: bringing the mood board to life (going shopping)

To refrain from impulse shopping or simply getting distracted, it happens to the best of us sometimes. I would say to select five to seven times from your mood board/ collection that appear most, items that you feel highlight your style. Create a list of those items, so that you don't lose track whilst out shopping.

If you are currently surround by people who aren't bring out the best in you, they make you feel lesser than you are and are only by your side when it suits them.

I personally went through this situation this year with my group of close friends, I was blindsided by what they were doing to me. It was only until my friends from outside my friendship circle brought it up to me. When you're surrounded by people that you've known for so long, you never would expect them to take advantage or abuse your friendship. If people around you are coming to you with concerns, please do listen to them they just want want is best for you.

When I started to distance myself from my group of "friends", I'll be honest it was a difficult transition. My friends and I would always be seen together in School or on social media. I remember in the summer, people began to message me wondering as to why I wasn't posting them, or hanging out with them as much as I used to. I slowly began to spend more time with my other friends, and reconnecting with my old friends I haven't communicated with in a long time.

The moral of this story is that yes it will be hard to distance yourself from people you are close with, it may start arguments or conflict. But please don't drain yourself by continuing to have them in your lives. You'll look back on this time in the future and thank yourself that you took a step back.

To make sure your striving and staying on the right track to be meeting those goals, write them down somewhere with easy access and review them monthly.

Invent goals for different aspects of your life that you feel need some improvement. Such as, spending more time with family and friends, scoring a good mark in a subject that haven't been doing so well in or picking a book every now then.

Ensure that goals that are being set are not absurd, they are realistic and measurable in some way, attempt to set goals that are achievable. Setting goals that are unattainable will result in demotivating you to achieve your goals.
