reading slump : a reader's worst nightmare (Urban dictionary)

If you often find yourself in the situation of not knowing what to read nor having the motivation to do so, despite having the time to and a never ending TBR waiting for you, then this article is for you.
Here are some of my tips and tricks to try to get out of a reading slump.

Don’t push yourself

It defeats the purpose of reading if you force yourself to read books you don’t like or are not in the mood for, feeling a sense of obligation about reading a book will most likely result in you not reading it than the contrary (except if it’s for schoolwork, sorry not sorry but in this case you have to).

Keeping track of what you’re reading

Virtually (Goodreads is your friend) or on paper, it can help to keep track of what you read, in order to motivate you to read even more. If you’re feeling artistic, you can also keep a book journal with illustrations and quotes.

Rereading

Sometimes the easiest solution to get out of a reading slump is by rereading one of your favorite books. A book you know already cannot deceive you and you know exactly what to expect when you open it. My go-to is Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo.

Movie adaptations

This advice can work both ways. Either watching a movie or series adapted from a book will make you want to read it. Either wanting to watch a movie will give you the motivation to read the book first (so you can then complain it’s not the same as in the book while watching it).

Finding people to share your passion with

Reading is by definition a solitary activity but it doesn’t mean you can’t talk about it with your friends, or someone from your family (my sister is my favorite person to talk about books with). You can try reading a book at the same time or reading their favorite book.

Go to the bookstore (or the library) right now

Finally, and it goes with my first point, if you’re reading this article right now surrounded by books you do not feel like reading and you have enough time, just go to the bookstore, pick a book you find really interesting, and open it as soon as you’re home. I don’t know about you but the longer I wanted to read a book, the less I want to read it even if I was originally very excited to do so. In order to avoid that feeling, choose one you want to read and immediately start.

Hope this article gave you the motivation you needed to start reading.
