I remember when I had first heard the term, “earthing.” I thought it was some kind of special gardening technique. Little did I know that it was the most simple, yet most life-changing technique to improve my sleep health.

When I was told about earthing, I had been having problems sleeping consistently throughout the night. It would take me at least 30 minutes to fall asleep, and then I would wake up at least four to five times throughout the night. I would be able to fall right back asleep each time I woke up, but regardless it was still broken sleep. This became a pattern of mine for over a month. It started wearing me down daily. I would feel extremely tired while I worked, and it also made me irritable.

A friend of mine who is a pro at all things green and natural told me ‘earthing’ would be my remedy for sleep issues. So, I was all ears...

What is ‘Earthing’?

Earthing is having direct skin contact with the earth, as it brings great health benefits. These benefits include consistent quality sleep. Unfortunately, most of us fall into the trap of routine, and lose connection with Earth. As a result, this makes our bodies starved of electrons. This causes inflammation in our bodies. Inflammation is linked to many chronic illnesses that exist today.

Essentially, earthing is the transfer of Earth’s surface energy onto you. The best way to practice earthing is to walk outside without shoes and socks on. Sand or grass are the most ideal surfaces for this. You’ll have an abundance of electrons transfer over.

How does it work?

Earthing can stabilize the release of cortisol in the body, a hormone produced during times of stress, and increase the release of melatonin, an important hormone that regulates sleep.

The earth has an infinite supply of free electrons, so when a person walks barefoot on its natural surface, those electrons naturally flow between the earth and the body, reducing free radicals and eliminating any static electrical charge. This reduces inflammation from occurring in the body, which in turn prevents inflammation-related health issues.
