Hey foxes, how are you guys doing? This is @theperksofbeingmeeveryday and we are going to talk about inspiration today.

I’m pretty sure sometimes you have a lot of motivation and good intentions, but the mind won’t follow and you have 0 ideas.

Here, I’m going to share with you my inspirations tips; what I do when I don't know what to draw. I hope you can apply those tips to any kind of art in general, but since I draw and paint every single day, it might be a bit focused on drawing.

Pinterest

The first thing I do when I don’t know what to draw is to go on Pinterest.

I know, I know. I’m pretty sure that you all do that when you’re looking for inspiration. But the thing is I would recommend having a well built Pinterest account.

If you want to be able to find something, then your board should be organised. As much as I love mess, if you just scroll through the website, you’ll likely be lost and you still won’t know what to draw/paint.

I organise my board by categories. I have pieces of arts I like, references, faces… The list can go on.

I think it is important to have a references board and a faces board - they are the ones I use the most. It is okay to use references!

In fact it will help you improve a lot and there are so many beautiful pictures on Pinterest you can't help but find something that catches your eyes.

I’ll leave you here my Pinterest account if you want to have my references board saved: www.pinterest.com/theperksofbeingmeeveryday

Instagram Artists

This one may sound similar to the first one but actually, it is pretty different.

I recommend following various artists that match your style on Instagram.

You shouldn’t use drawings as references. It will not make you improve and drawing style is a very intimate thing that you should not copy but some of those artists have very cool ideas and designs.

I have a notebook with some of my favorite drawings printed and when I’m looking for inspiration I look at it to get “the vibes”. I don’t know if it makes sense at all ahah but I hope you understand what I mean!

The more you look at drawings, pictures...the more your mind is going to create a mental board of inspirations.

Also if you can’t really find your own style, looking at drawings should be a good thing.

Again I don't talk about stealing the style of another artist, but you will see what you like: Big eyes, sharp lines, colorful drawings etc… That will give you even more inspiration.

Especially now on Instagram you can save pictures! (I have a “drawings” board, a “to draw” board and an “art tips” board.) Some accounts are really helpful, so give it a try.

Music, Books and Movies

Whenever I don't know what to draw, I try to focus on one of my favorite characters from a book, or one of my favorite songs.

It can be books, music, movies, anything you want! You’ll see that with time, you’ll be more comfortable with the aesthetic of some characters.

When you don’t know what to draw you shouldn't be hard on yourself. It happens to everyone, but to get back on track you need to gain more confidence.

It’s the same as when you can’t read anymore, when you are stuck in a book, the best way love reading again is to read your favorite book!

So try to draw, paint, write about something you KNOW that you love, like your comfort character.

I know that to improve your art, it is important to challenge yourself with new things, but sometimes you just have to feel good and draw your favorite thing.

If you wonder who is my go to drawing person, it is Kim Namjoon! I feel very at ease with his features and expressions and with his aesthetic in general. So whenever I don’t know what to draw, I draw RM ahah.

By drawing based on book characters, you will use your imagination a lot, and it is a very good way to draw very diversed people or designs because the possibilities in books are endless.

You may draw mermaid, blond people, fairies… This is one of the best exercises to improve your art, make your brain work and have some inspirations.

If you want a lot of characters to draw you should start reading The Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare: there are around 20 books and A LOT OF different people to draw !

Keeping a Messy Sketchbook

This tip is linked to what my dear Paula said in her last article.

She said that İt was important to have 2 sketchbooks with one with all of your messy ideas and I couldn't agree more! Especially when you have 0 inspiration, this sketchbook is your life saver.

Everything that comes to your mind is a great place to start.

These drawings don’t have to be pretty (they usually are very ugly lol) but the point is just to get a free mind by putting everything on paper.

It can be words, colors, shapes… like a big brainstorming.

At first it can be hard to do because you don’t have the feeling of drawing something aesthetically pleasing but it helps a lot.

Random doodles are my favorite to find on Pinterest because you can really see what is going on in the artist's mind!

Draw Everything That Comes to Your Mind

This is directly related to the previous point as you can see.

Just look around yourself and put it on the paper. This is a simple trick because it requires 0 imagination.

When I’m lost in my drawings, I take the last picture in my phone gallery and draw it! The results are not always there but it helps me see what I like to draw and what I don’t like to draw.

As a faithful example I have to admit that landscapes are so hard for me to draw…

Draw Various Things

And that’s the transition to my last point: you should not only draw one thing.

I know it’s hard, I struggle a lot with this tip too but the thing is that if you only draw one thing, your mind is going to run out of ideas!

By exploring different styles, and different techniques you’ll discover things and get more ideas.

You can even mix a bunch of different aesthetics to create a new one. Don’t limit yourself only at something you’re good at.

If you explore new things daily you’ll never get bored and tired of your work. Learning is one of the greatest experience you can have and you have so much to learn from other people. Keep that in mind!

Lastly, I think that every art session should have a playlist so I’ll leave you here the Spotify Playlist I listen to when I draw.

I hope those were helpful. If you have more tips please let us know.

See you.

I'm kinda hot though.
