What the movie is about

Black Is King is a musical film and visual album directed, written and executive produced by Beyoncé. The film serves as a visual companion to the 2019 album The Lion King: The Gift , a tie-in album made by Beyoncé for the 2019 remake of The Lion King.
A young African king is cast out from his family into an unforgiving world. He subsequently undergoes a journey "through betrayal, love and self-identity" to reclaim his throne, utilizing the guidance of his ancestors and childhood love. The story is told through the voices of present-day black artists. It follows the stories of black families throughout time and tells "a tale about a young king's transcendent journey through betrayal, love and self-identity."

What does Black is King mean?

Beyoncé explained that the film was created to -

"celebrate the breadth and beauty of Black ancestry" and "to present elements of Black history and African tradition, with a modern twist and a universal message, and what it truly means to find your self-identity and build a legacy."

The film stars:

My Rating: 9.4/10(my highest rating ever)

My Thoughts: This film was just incredible you guys. The fact that Disney+ was able to gain more 20 million new subscribers(yes 20 million) because of Black is King just showed how powerful black excellence really is. The film was definitetly one to remember and was definitely a pop culture moment. Beyonce really let her work speak for itself with the jaw dropping visuals, cinematography, costumes and narration all show tremendous hard work and artistry. It was beautiful. Beyonce showed that there is no one like her, because not only did she star in it but she wrote, directed, and executive produced the whole thing, oh yeah and she is a mother of 3!!! Blue Ivy Carter definitely stole the show with her many appearances in the film.

Personally as someone who is black, African and lives in Africa all the representation in this film was so spectacular and with everything going on in the world this film just brought a feeling of happiness and appreciation of black culture as a whole. I'm pretty sure Beyonce wore more that 75 different outfits in the movie showing us that she is a fashion icon as well. Shoutout to the wardrobe and hair department because all the pieces worn in the movie were exquisite. Also the inclusion of African artists and actors that made the film diverse. As someone who grew up listening to Tiwa Savage, Yemi Alade, Busiswa just to mention and to see them on such a large international platform and on the album is such a lovely feeling.

In my opinion to best enjoy this film, you should watch the lion king or know the lion king story. And to enjoy it even more you should listen to the album The Lion King: The Gift because the movie is pretty much a visual version of the album. However, I found that I got confused with the overall story that was being told, I feel like the focus on visuals and cinematography over shadowed the main story and thus not making it as clear as the lion king story should be. As much as Beyonce did include African artists, these artists were from Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana & South Africa, which is just a representation of western and southern Africa, I really wish she would have included some East African representation like the band Sauti Sol. And as much as Beyonce made an effort to show African culture and be inspired by it in this film, in the dances and in the music, she doesn't tour in Africa. She has been on so many world tours but not done shows in Africa even though for the past few years she has been drawing a lot of inspiration from the continent, with 54 countries and fast pace development so many countries in Africa are more than capable of holding a Beyonce and Jay-z concert.
