We're all probably familiar with Frida. She was a Mexican painter but there is so much more to her story. Frida was born in Coyoacรกn, Mexico City in Mexico, on July 6th, 1907. She was born to a Mexican mother and a German Mexican father. Frida wasn't an only child, and had many siblings. Based on documentaries, it can be said that Frida had an exuberant and lively personality, and it shows.

After a near fatal bus accident, Frida suffered several life changing and painful bodily experiences. Aside from that, Frida was also diagnosed with polio as a child. Often in pain, and bed ridden, especially after her accident, Frida drew what she could see from her field of view, laying down in bed. She'd draw on her body cast, and eventually on an easel from her bed until she was able to fully mobile again for most of the duration of her life. Frida, realizing that she may have had a hand for painting, asked Diego Rivera (who's be her twice married husband), for his critiques and such, which were, of course, all positive. Diego's name as Mexico's most famous painter at the time, gave him the right to critique in her eyes. Eventually, due to her interest in politics, Frida joined the Mexican communist party in 1927. After years of traveling to New York and Paris, heartbreaking experiences with her husband Diego, a miscarriage and other life events, Frida had her first solo exhibit in Mexico. Frida arrived to her exhibition in style, laying in bed due to strict doctor's orders to stay in bed. Eventually, due to ailing health and an artistic, yet painful life, Frida died at the age of 47, her wish was to be cremated as she "spent enough time laying down", in such a pain inducing body.

Ahh Frida. In my opinion, there's so much that made her special. She had such a zest for life. She did as she pleased and simply lived her life. It seems as if she almost flowed through life, as if she just allowed her emotions to fluctuate and she experienced them so freely, which is really inspiring to me. She was also unopposed to gender norms and such which made her even more special. She was also known to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community and the feminist movement, making her icons in both areas. She was also known to be an icon for Chichanos as well. Her overall personality as well as her unique art made her special. She even eventually, ended up on "Vogue Paris".

Frida's art was groundbreaking. Her paintings evoke so many emotions for me. There's something about her portraits, they're not perfect, painted to scale, paintings, but they're still so realistic. her art has a lively melancholic sense to them. Her artwork was much inspired by her experiences with her body, her marriage and her life. I believe that Frida used painting as an outlet for her emotions. Asa documentary or autobiography or, the window into her mind and soul. Frida had over 20 paintings in her entire collection. I especially love "The Two Fridas" and "The Broken Column", as well as "Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird". Though sometimes known as a surrealist, she was not. Her paintings were her experiences through art.
