Hello everyone! I decided to take a break from submitting a writing-based article to share another passion of mine with you.

Although creative writing is my first love, I also have a dream of writing a screenplay one day. This year I have tried to watch movies very intentionally to try and learn as much as I can from them. In doing so, I have come across some amazing films! In this article, I am going to share with you some of my favorite thrillers. Hope you enjoy!

Directed by Dan Gilroy
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Bill Paxton, Riz Ahmed

I think the best thrillers are those that are believable. What was so unsettling about Nightcrawler was that it wasn't very unrealistic at all. Jake Gyllenhaal is amazing as one of my favorite morally grey characters of all time, Lou Bloom, in this film about the unseen aspects of the news, questionable morality, and corruption of media.

Directed by Martin Scorsese
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Patricia Clarkson
Temporarily removed

I've never been a huge fan of Leo, but this (and ๐˜ฟ๐™Ÿ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™œ๐™ค ๐™๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™๐™–๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™š๐™™, you should watch it!) really changed my mind. This is a movie you can never quite trust. You never will know 100% if you have a grasp of what is truly happening, and it will leave you second-guessing yourself for hours after you finish.

Short synopsis: Two U.S. Marshalls get sent to an insane asylum that rests on an island after receiving reports of a woman that has gone missing.

Directed by Tom Ford
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Amy Adams, Armie Hammer, Isla Fisher, Michael Shannon
Temporarily removed

This movie messed me up, and I still don't really know what to think. It's so unsettling that it feels like you can't really take a deep breath the entire time. Of course, Jake Gyllenhaal and Amy Adams deliver amazing performances that really make the entire movie that much better.

Short Synopsis: A woman receives a manuscript written by her ex-husband and realizes as the story goes on that it was inspired by their marriage.

๐™‚๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™š ๐™‚๐™ž๐™ง๐™ก (2014)

Directed by David Fincher
Starring: Rosamund Pike, Ben Affleck, Tyler Perry, Neil Patrick Harris
gone girl, gun, and movie image

Gone Girl is unique from the other movies on this list as it doesn't really fit into what you might classically think of as a "thriller." However, it is absolutely genius. Pay close attention to the symbolism and irony. And if you want to fully enjoy this story, read the book by Gillian Flynn!

Short Synopsis: Nick's wife, Amy Dunne, goes missing on their fifth wedding anniversary. As the investigation goes on, secrets are uncovered that reveal their marriage wasn't all that it seemed, and that there is much more to the story of Amy's disappearance than what is being shown.

Directed by Brad Anderson
Starring: Christian Bale

Ok listen. I was less disturbed by this storyline and more by Christian Bale's acting and the fact that he lost 60 pounds for this role. He looked unrecognizable, it hurt my soul. That is commitment.

Short Synopsis: Trevor Reznik hasn't slept in a year. One day he finds a note on his fridge of an empty game of hangman. As the letters fill themselves in, his paranoia grows, and he begins to see things that no one else can.

๐™•๐™ค๐™™๐™ž๐™–๐™˜ (2007)

Directed by David Fincher
Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo
actor, film, and jake gyllenhaal image

In this house, we respect Jake Gyllenhaal. This movie is also a little different from the others. It follows the killings of the Zodiac Killer, and the people that were trying to find him.

๐™ƒ๐™ช๐™จ๐™ (2016)

Directed by Mike Flanagan
Starring: Kate Siegel, John Gallagher Jr.
film, horror, and movie image

Essentially, Maddie is a deaf and mute writer who moved to the woods to try and finish her manuscript. One night, a man arrives and she finds herself in the middle of a sinister game of survival. Although the synopsis is fairly simple, the small details of this movie are what make it amazing (and super creepy).

There are a lot of things about this movie that I don't particularly like. Still, I can't deny that the first time I watched it, it was really unsettling and the basic concept is awesome for a thriller movie. Watch it and see what you think!

Short synopsis: A young woman gets into a car crash and wakes up in a bunker where she is told by a man named Howard that there has been an invasion of earth that has made the air above toxic. She doesn't know if Howard is telling the truth, or if he is feeding her lies to make her stay.

american psycho, christian bale, and horror image

Christian Bale!! That alone should be a good enough reason for you to watch this movie, but if you need more...

This movie really doesn't fit into any genre in my opinion. It's more of a dark comedy, and although it is a satirical depiction of American materialism and the "American Dream" it's still psychologically challenging. Definitely one of my favorites!

IMDB synopsis: "Patrick Bateman, hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he delves deeper into his violent, hedonistic fantasies"

I hope you all enjoyed this article! If you have any thoughts on any of these movies or have any recommendations please feel free to reach out.
