Writing is incredibly powerful. Your words written on paper have the ability to create an entire world filled with people and stories that you made in your mind. You know and everyone else knows that writing is fiction, and yet, it's real. To be a writer, all you have to do is write.

Inspiration

The biggest question that you can ask any writer is, "Where do you get your ideas?" The truth is ideas can come from anywhere. It can be a conversation you had with your sister, a song lyric that you like, or even a photograph. The beginning of an idea can begin with a new character, an object, or what you picture the world of your story to look like. The bottom line is there is no one place writers use to come up with an idea or any one way to get there.

Your Experiences

Write What You're Afraid Of

The best writing out there, the stories that feel the most real are the ones that are the most honest. As a young writer, it takes time to find your own voice and for it to be reflected in what you write. Sometimes it takes writing down own experiences that we've hidden away for the truth in our stories to shine through. So I encourage you right now to sit down and write about an experience or memory that left you feeling afraid, sad, or even embarrassed. Try to push yourself past the boundaries of comfort. Really take the time to reflect on what you've written and ask yourself what that writing makes you feel and why you feel/felt that way. Know that you are the only one who is going to read this. It's just you and a piece of paper.

Make It Your Own

We all know the fables and fairy tales we were told as children - the tale of Snow White, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and so on. Find a story that you know well and approach it at a different angle. What if you told the story from the villain's perspective? What if the story took place in modern days? What if one of the characters saw a therapist or was a witness in a court room? Sit down and write the story.
