Hi hearters! So today i feel like writing a more meaningful and (hopefully) educational content for you guys to read :)

As you may know, the chinese culture is really deep, but are very fun to learn about. I planned to make this into 2 parts, with the 2nd part maybe published tomorrow so yea let's start >>>

brief introduction

the chinese zodiacs are pretty similar to your normal zodiac signs, but they're based of years you're born instead of your birth month and date

the wheel of zodiacs are made up of 12 animals which symbolizes certain types of personality traits::
- rat, ox, tiger, hare/rabbit, dragon, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, pig

legend of the 12 zodiacs

you might be wondering: why is the arrangement so messed up? how can the rat be the first out of all the animals? not the dragon or tiger? as kids, we learnt about the legend of the 12 zodiac signs.
Long, long ago, there was no Chinese zodiac. The Jade Emperor wanted to select 12 animals to be his guards. He sent an immortal being into man's world to spread the message that the earlier one went through the Heavenly Gate, the better the rank one would have.

The next day, animals set off towards the Heavenly Gate. Rat got up very early. On his way to the gate, he encountered a river. He had to stop there, owing to the swift current. After waiting a long time, Rat noticed Ox about to cross the river and swiftly jumped into Ox's ear. The diligent Ox did not mind at all and simply continued. After crossing the river, he raced towards the palace of the Jade Emperor. Suddenly, The rat jumped out of the ox's ear and dashed to the feet of the Emperor. Rat won first place and Ox was second.

Tiger and Rabbit came third and fourth because both are fast and competitive, but the tiger was faster. The rabbit got across the river by hopping on stepping stones and a floating log. Good-looking Dragon was fifth and was immediately noticed by the Jade Emperor, who said Dragon's son could be sixth. But Dragon's son didn't come with him that day.

Just then, Snake came forward and said Dragon was his adoptive father; so Snake ranked sixth. Horse and Goat arrived. They were very kind and modest and each let the other go first. The Jade Emperor saw how polite they were and ranked them seventh and eighth.

Monkey had fallen well behind. But he jumped between trees and stones, and caught up to be ninth. Last were Rooster, Dog, and Pig. These 12 animals became guards of the Heavenly Gate.

why isn't the cat included in it?

aha! i used to think about this as well, until i stumbled over a belief talking about it. there are lots of versions about it so i'll just try to include the one that makes the best sense out of all the other versions:

the cat and rat are actually pretty good friends, and are neighbors, it's just that people like to bully the rat due to it's size. the day when the emperor told them the news, the cat and rat made an agreement: they will go to the heavenly gate together.

but the rat was cunning, and was tired of being bullied while the cat got all the love. he decided to use this opportunity to outshine the cat. knowing the cat is a sleepyhead, he left early morning, without waking up the cat.

the cat woke up when all the positions of the 12 zodiacs are completed. knowing the rat got first, and going to the heavenly gate without him, the latter became mad and felt betrayed.

this is how a great enmity grew between them and how the rat is always scared of the cat

ps: there's an alternative that the rat pushed the cat into a river knowing it couldn't swim which i find pretty ridiculous somehow
