Asalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

If Allaah the Most High allows, I would like to include some benefits of istigfar which we can in shaa Allaah see in our lives too if we commit to seeking forgiveness from Allaah the Most High constantly!

As human beings we constantly make mistakes and commit sins;

Anas ibn Malik reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “All of the children of Adam are sinners, and the best sinners are those who repent.”

This doesn't justify committing sins! You have to try your very best to abstain from sins.

Nonetheless, if we sin then that also means that our hearts need to be polished too because with every sin, our heart gets a black spot, until our whole heart is black;

Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, when the servant commits a sin, a black mark appears upon his heart. If he abandons the sin, seeks forgiveness, and repents, then his heart will be polished. If he returns to the sin, the blackness will be increased until it overcomes his heart. It is the covering that Allah has mentioned: 'No, rather a covering is over their hearts from what they have earned.” (83:14)

Ibn al-Jawzi said in al-Tadhkirah fi 'l-Wa'dh 1/118: ''Al-Ma'asi (sins) are like chains around the sinner's necks, there is no way to break free of them except by al-istigfar and al-tawbah''

The effect of your sins can also be seen in your worship as Yahya ibn Mu'adh stated: ''The sickness of the body results in pain while sickness of the heart is a result of sins. Thus, just as the body does not find enjoyment in eating whilst it is sick; similarly, the heart does not experience the sweetness of worship with sins.'' (Dham al-Hawaa v.1 pg.68)

So if you want to feel sweetness in your worship then never abandon istigfar and hold on tightly to it until your soul is taken from this dunya.

Now let's move on to more benefits of istigfar in shaa Allaah.

Abu Umamah reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, the angel on the left side will raise his pen over the error or sin of a Muslim servant for six hours. If he sincerely regrets it and seeks forgiveness from Allah, the angel will throw it aside. Otherwise, he will record it as one sin.”

How Merciful is Allaah that He gives us so much ease and so many chances to increase our good deeds over our bad deeds and yet we take it for granted.

Do you want more blessings in your life? Then hold on to istigfar;

'''Ask forgiveness of your Lord. Indeed, He is ever a Perpetual Forgiver. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in [continuing] showers. And give you increase in wealth and children and provide for you gardens and provide for you rivers'' (71:10-13)

''And O my people, ask forgiveness of your Lord and then repent to Him. He will send [rain from] the sky upon you in showers and increase you in strength [added] to your strength." (11:52)

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to seek Allaah's forgiveness, even though he is Prophet and is forgiven by Allaah. So one wonders how comes he still asked for forgiveness and prayed so much to Allaah?

It comes from knowing Allaah - the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, knew and appreciated the Names and Attributes of Allaah and so he desired to be a grateful slave of Allaah, as has been mentioned in the following hadith:

Al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would pray until his feet were swollen. It was said to him, “Why do you do this when Allah has forgiven your past and future sins?” The Prophet said, “Shall I not be a grateful servant?”

May Allaah the Most High forgive our sins with a complete forgiveness and may He guide us to be obedient to Him!

This is what Allaah has made easy for me to mention and any good you have learned only comes from Allaah, and any mistakes made come from me and shaytan, and Allaah the Most High and His Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, are free from it all!

May the peace and blessings be upon the Prophet and his family and his companions.

And Allaah is the All-Knowing!
