Hello angels. Today I wanted to write an article about anxiety disorder. I personally suffer from it and I would love to share with you the symptoms of it and tips that will help you have a more peaceful mind. If you think you may be suffering from this disorder or you do and want to be able to have more control over it, I sincerely hope this article can help you. โ™ก

Everything I will be sharing with you is based on my personal experiences and advices my psychologist has given me that have been helpful.

Common Symptoms of Anxiety Disorder

- Excessive worrying
- Feeling nervous, restless or tense
- Having a sense of impending danger or panic
- Increased heart rate
- Hyperventilation (Breathing rapidly)
- Sweating, trembling
- Feeling weak or tired
- Sweaty palms
- Feeling pressure in your chest area
- Muscle tension
- Sleep problems

These are some common symptoms of anxiety that individuals who suffer from it experience. However, there are also symptoms that some have but others don't, so it varies according to how advanced your anxiety is or simply the way your body reacts to it.

According to my therapist, there are different common types of anxiety disorders, and these are:

- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD): It consists in feeling anxious on most days, worrying about lots of different things, for a period of six months or more.

- Social Anxiety: Intense fear of being embarrassed, humiliated or criticized; even in everyday situations like speaking publicly, eating in public, and others.

- Panic disorder: A person has panic attacks, which are intense, overwhelming and often uncontrollable feelings of anxiety combined with a range of physical symptoms.

It is important that we understand every symptom we feel, so that we can be treated properly. People who do not understand what this disorder really is and how it truly feels like, will probably just reduce it as a feeling of being worried all the time, but as you can see, there are many other symptoms than just "worrying", and it feels absolutely horrible.

It's a struggle between you and your mind, and it can be overwhelming and extremely exhausting to feel like this all the time. Believe me, I know.

But, there are certain things you can do that can help you have a calmer, or at least a little more peaceful mind.

Your Way to a Peaceful Mind

I will now share with you some tips that have helped me control my anxiety. Although you may still feel that sentiment deep inside you, I hope that with this little piece of advice, you can at least be able to reduce your worries from 100% to 99%.

1. Take time for yourself

Do things you love. Meditate in things that make you happy, have a thankful spirit. Listen to music, learn relaxation techniques, take on a new hobby, do anything that can make you happy. Sometimes we get so involved in what is happening around us and how our mind is always going and going, that we tend to forget to take out time for ourselves. We forget to take care of our bodies and minds or we can't do it without feeling that we are losing time, that we can be doing something else instead; but what we don't realize is that giving ourselves a well deserved break is essential for our wellbeing. Stepping back from your problems by taking time for yourself can help you clear your head and feel more relaxed. Always remember that "your best" doesn't mean pushing yourself to your breaking point. "Your best" is always better when you're happy and healthy.

2. Don't be afraid to get professional help

If only I knew when my anxiety started to get really bad how good I was going to feel by visiting a therapist, I would have done it way sooner. I was afraid to speak up about my problems with basically, anyone. Due to this, I lasted a long time in getting the professional help I needed. The fear of being judged by others was also something that I worried about; "Oh she goes to a psychologist", "She visits a therapist" "Why do you even need therapy?". These thoughts held me back from healing myself. You should never put the opinions of others above your well being. This is your healing. Your life. With professional help, you can help get rid of that knot you feel in your stomach, you may be needed to drink pills like I do, and let me tell you something; ever since I started my treatment, I have been feeling so much better, I have no words to describe how thankful I am to myself for finally taking that big step and getting rid of my fear of getting professional help. So, if I could, you can too!

3. Learn what triggers your anxiety and write it down

What is it? Is it work, family, school, or something else you can identify? And if you can't identify it? It is extremely important that you get to know yourself and your anxiety. Sometimes our minds can look like a big knot that we do not know how to undo, so it is important that you take your time and realize what exactly are the things that are making you anxious. Write in a journal when youโ€™re feeling stressed or anxious, and look for a pattern, try to identify the things that make you feel worst and once you are done, read what you wrote down. This will help you understand more what exactly you are feeling, cause when it's all in our head it seems blurry and we often don't know where to start, but once you have it all sorted out in a piece of paper you can know what measures to take to make you feel better. Also, write things you are thankful for and things that make you happy. Gratitude may help relieve stress and anxiety by focusing your thoughts on whatโ€™s positive in your life.

4. Learn to love yourself

The thing is that, without your flaws, you wouldn't be you. You can always try to become a better version of yourself, but you must always remember that you can be a masterpiece and a work in process, simultaneously. Never let yourself get in the way of yourself, learn to be the more 'you' you can possibly be. Make your mental health a priority, make yourself a priority. Be gentle with yourself! no more negative talks about you from you. Mental illness is not a phase, something to judge, shameful, a choice, laziness, or a character flaw. So please, love yourself for who you are. Gradually, little by little. The more you love yourself, the more accepting you become of the fact that you are suffering from anxiety.

5. Avoid procrastination without over-working yourself

Another way to avoid feeling anxious of things you need to do is to stay on top of your priorities and stop procrastinating. Anxiety may make you feel exhausted and with the need of not doing absolutely anything, but then when you don't do nothing you always feel anxious because you didn't do what you were supposed to do. Procrastination can lead you to act nervously, making it hard for you to catch up. This can cause stress, which affects your health and sleep quality. What you need to do that I started doing as well, is making a to-do list organized by priority. What I do is that I make one for my monthly goals and things I need or want to do that month, but you can do it weekly if you'd like. The key of not over-working yourself is by setting realistic goals you can achieve and not making your to-do list too overpacked to the point that you don't have time for yourself, like we mentioned in tip #1, you need time for yourself and relax. Also, try to take breaks in between, because switching between tasks or multitasking can be stressful. Making this list will help your life become more organized so that you can feel in control of what you need to do on a daily basis.

6. Live the moment

Appreciate every moment and be thankful for the day. Every day has its own worries, so take it day by day. It is difficult, but it isn't impossible. Often we are so trapped in thoughts of the future or the past that we forget to experience and enjoy what's happening right now. This is one of the things I personally struggle the most with, my mind is always going too far back or going and going on about the future, but it certainly isn't impossible to enjoy what you are doing in the present moment; psychologists call it savoring. You could do this at any time of the day really, when you're eating, taking a shower, watering your plants, listening to music; what ever you are doing, enjoy it and live it. Most negative thoughts are either about the past or the future, so savoring the moment can make you happier because as you set an awareness of the present moment, worrying melts away. The "what ifs" we usually obsess about are not actually happening in the present, so please angels, live the moment!

7. Learn that your Happiness depends on you, not someone else

You won't be happy living a life directed by other people nor will you have a peaceful mind. We are often consumed by the fear of being judged and that doesn't allow us to do what we really want to just because of what people will think; or at least what our minds think they will think. It is common that people that suffer from anxiety have this feeling of being watched by everyone, that someone is criticizing you. But learning that your happiness does not and cannot depend on someone else' thoughts is one of the most important steps if you want to achieve a peaceful mind. Instead of relying on others to uphold your happiness and self image, you should try to create yourself in to someone that does not need external validation.

How? I know it is not helpful to tell someone that suffers from this disorder to just stop caring. So, first of all, remember that you know best. Nobody else is living your life, they might have opinions, but the only person who knows what is best for you is, in fact, you. You need to acknowledge that basing your worth on others opinions isn't a healthy way to live. Those people will not grant you any happiness, you will. Don't waste your time trying to get everyone to like you, because it is impossible; don't believe you need to be perfect, because this will lead to an immense amount of pressure and stress and you will never feel like you are really being yourself. This is why loving yourself is so important too. When you recognize your self-worth you limit the importance you attach to having other people validate you.

8. You aren't alone

I guess that, at least for me, the words "me too" are so comforting. You are not the only one that is struggling with anxiety. You are not alone. You will do great things despite your anxiety, I'm sure of it!

It is okay to medicate!

It is okay to take care of your mental health!

You are capable!

Don't say maybe if you want to say no!

Don't over-work yourself!

It's okay to take time for you! don't feel guilty!
