It’s hard to believe that the fourth installment of the Attributes of God series is finally in this blog’s wake. I hope you have found the other Attributes of God posts enlightening and fulfilling. If you haven’t done so already, stop by the blog feed and read The Attributes of God, The Attributes of God: Letter A, and The Attributes of God: Letter B. This post will focus on the name “comforter.”

Great Comforter

The name “comforter” comes from the Greek word “paracletos,” meaning “advocate.” Literally translated, the word bears the meaning of “one who is summoned to the side of another.” Jesus when he was about to depart to Heaven, told the disciples that He must leave in order for the Holy Spirit, the helper, to come. The meaning of this word is in a legal sense to defend, or plead the case for. Jesus and the Holy Spirit are the defenders and comforters.

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

Soul Advocate

Legal actions of the word is seen in the following: John 14:16, John 14:26, John 15:26, John 16:7, Romans 8:27, and Romans 8:34, and many others. The Greek work “parakletos” in 1 John 2:1 is used to define Christ as an advocate with the Father. That verse is below.

“if any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” (1 John 2:1, ESV).

For a more in-depth view of the translations, see Bible Study Tools at their article,"Comforter."
