We all desire happiness in our life. In fact, being happy is a form of self-care especially when you do something you love the most and/or you experience a really good day. But, we all know that not every day is a good day and we sometimes end up being just sad and even depressed about it. Yet again, as the saying goes, “you only live once”, and this is actually true.

Let me share my thoughts about being happy all the time no matter how bad a day can get: (Let me make a short list)

1. Happiness, in truth, starts within ourselves.

I read this one quote that says something exactly like that. Never depend your happiness to other people because you’ll only get disappointed. People will not make you happy. You are the only one who can make yourself happy.

When I was in high school and college, I always thought that having a lot of friends and pleasing them made me happy. But, as I grew older (and wiser), I realized that I forgot about myself, which ended up me being anxious and depressed all the time when my friends don’t pay attention to me. I actually ended up seeing my guidance counselor because of depression and I had close friends who gave up on me because I became ‘too needy’. With those bad experiences, I finally pondered on the kind of person I am and here I am: I do what I want and I don’t care of what other people think. If I lose some friends, so be it because people come and go. As long as I’m happy and I still have my family, everything’s okay. I’m not going to stress over petty things that’ll just make my head hurt.

2. Discover what makes you happy.

As I grew older and wiser, too, the biggest realization that I had was when I decided that I no longer care what other people think of me. I also decided not to depend my happiness to others especially to my friends. I also thought before that I want to be able to travel the world and have the things that I want so that I could be happy; I get really envious to some of my friends and acquaintances going out of the country. However, in the end, I realized that what truly makes me happy is just being right at home where my family is; even though they tend to be stressful, I learned over time that I was raised in a really good family and I’m thankful for that.

Family, therefore, makes me happy.

3. Never stress over a bad day.

quote, inspiration, and life image

A bad day is just a one bad day. Don’t let it get to you because it’s going to eat you for the rest of your life if you do. Treat yourself to ice cream, milk tea, coffee, anything that will make you smile again.

To be honest, Starbucks makes me really happy.

4. Carpe diem

Sieze the day! Like I said before, you only live once. If you don’t enjoy the now, you’ll regret it in the future. Even if work is getting super stressful, still try to enjoy it. If it’s getting too much for you, find more opportunities out there. Our options are limitless. It’s just a matter of how you’ll do and choose your options.

I’m always stressed with work. But, I always make sure that by the end of the day, I shouldn’t overthink too much and that tomorrow is another new day. I get super excited when Fri-yay comes (especially during pay day!)

5. Finally, always pray.

Religious or not, it’s always nice to talk to your God. I’m a Catholic and I’ve seen the wonders of prayer. I’ve experienced its miracles in my every day life. I may not see it, but I have felt its power. It really helps. It’s not God’s fault that you had a bad day. He is only preparing you for the next things coming your way. He will eventually lead you to a beautiful destination. It is actually through prayer that I always have a positive outlook in life. Yeah, there are times that when I’m super stressed, I don’t really talk much to my friends (and sometimes I don’t smile at all), but in the end, I’m still thankful that I even survived the day.

Just being alive is enough.

As a final point: With a society living with norms and strict principles, our own happiness is in our hands. It is up to us whether we want to choose happiness or not at all. Remember, though, that self-care is really important and gaining happiness to ourselves is not being selfish. It’s about taking care of your well-being and yourself in general. So, be happy. 😄
