Hi there!

How are you doing today? I hope you’re ready to figure out what kind of skin type you have! I’ve always struggled to find the right products for my skin, since I didn’t know what type I had. There I was, using my mothers face cream, feeling all grown up without knowing what I was doing. I truly wish I figured that out a few years ago so I would gain more confidence at a younger age! That’s why I want to share all the important information with you guys. I think feeling good in your own skin is one of the crucial things for self development. Life is way too short to worry, so I will make sure that by the end of this article you know everything there is to know about your skin!

How to determine your skin type

Once you know your skin type, you have the right knowledge to buy the products that will make your skin look flawless again! It’s actually very easy to figure out what your skin type is! First, you have to clean your face with a mild cleanser and then pat it dry. Do not rub it dry! Let the skin rest for 30 minutes, do not apply any products in the meantime. Then, gently pat a blotting paper on the different areas on your face: forehead, nose, chin and cheeks. When you hold the blotting sheet in direct sunlight, you will see the amount of oil that’s left behind. When there’s little to no oil, you have a dry skin. If there’s some oil from your forehead and nose you have a normal/combination skin. If you see a lot of oil you most likely have an oily skin!

4 Different skin types

Now you’ve figured out what kind of skin type you have, it’s time to understand what that actually means! I will explain to you the 4 different skin types, how to recognize them and what to do about it!

  • Dry skin
  • Oily skin
  • Normal skin
  • Combination

1.Dry skin

A dry skin means actually that the superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis, isn’t moisturized anymore. It’s more common during the winter and in drier climates, but can actually happen all year round. There are a lot of different factors that influence the reasons why you suddenly have a dry skin. Such as cold temperatures, soap and chemical cleansers that depletes the skin of its natural layer.

A dry skin can be described as a very irritated and itchy skin. Most of the time it may crack and peel because the skin loses moisture.

The solution to fix this problem for 80% is actually to keep it all moisturized as much as you can! Personally, I love cream more than an oil, just because oil mostly contains alcohol which will dry out your skin even more! My favorite is Dove Silky Nourishment Body Cream! Besides that, you have to make sure that you shower with lukewarm water and maximum once a day. This was very difficult for me because I absolutely LOVE taking very hot showers. Unfortunately this makes your skin even more dry than it already was, especially in the winter.

2.Oily skin

An oily skin contains a high value of sebum. It’s hard to say what exactly causes an oily skin. Some experts believe stress makes your skin more oily than when you’re relaxed. Others say it’s hormonal because they affect the oil production. One thing is for sure, genetics do play a role! As a matter of fact, an oily skin has also a beneficial quality: People with oily skin tend to have a thicker skin AND fewer wrinkles! The trick is just to find a way that makes it work for you!

You can easily recognize and oily skin by it’s shiny appearance. Besides that you”ll see large pores, pimples and blackheads.

This may sounds weird, but moisturizing your skin with an oil-free moisturizer actually helps! Pay attention to products that has the label “noncomedogenic” which means it doesn’t clog your pores. Also never use make up that contains a lot of oil because this will only clog the pores and make it all worse. The best tip I can give you is to find products that work for you and to stick with your routine! Last tip I want to give you is to NEVER go to sleep with your make up on! I know it’s tempting to go to bed when you’re very tired and all you can think about is sleeping, but trust me. You”ll thank me in the morning!

3.Normal skin

Bless you. If you have a normal skin you’re doing just great by using whatever you’re using at this moment! The skin feels soft, doesn’t contain any redness and isn’t cracked. You’re very lucky that you’ve found the right products for your skin! Keep going!

This is a very difficult one because you do not only have an oily skin at some points, but also a dry skin. When you look in the mirror you can see the different zones in your in your face such as your “T-zone”and a part of your cheeks. Your T-zone starts on your forehead, down to your nose to your chin. In most cases your forehead and nose tend to be more oilier and blemished while your cheeks can be dry.

Your T-zone will be oily while your cheeks tend to be dry, especially in the winter! Another symptom that makes being on your period even worse, is because of all the hormones your skin will be oilier and can cause acne. Besides that, you can have some breakouts as well.

There are a lot of different products you can use, as long as you make sure it’s for both skin types! It’s not easy to find a product that works for you, but it’s not impossible either. Make sure to clean your face twice a day with a cleanser and finish with a moisturizer. My favorite cleanser is Vichy Purete Thermale 3-in-1 Step calming cleansing! Another tip I can give you is that you treat the different zones separately. For example, you can moisturize the dry parts of your skin with an oily cream while you use a different one for the more oilier parts like your T-zone! Honestly, that works best for me, because I tend to get a very oily skin if I use the same product for my whole face. Personally, Rose Water does the trick for me!

I genuinely hope you guys have enough information now to buy the right products! Please let me know what your favorite creams and masks are in the comments below!
