I remember taking a solo journey to Europe a very long time ago when I was but a young man. My plane landed at Gatwick Airport near Crawley, home county West Sussex, England, Great Britain, UK. Gatwick is the second largest airport to serve London. Heathrow Airport in the London Borough of Hillingdon, county Greater London, England, Great Britain, is the first largest. From Gatwick Airport I took the train to London where I stayed for one week.
After London, I took the BritRail train to Dover, home county Kent, England, Great Britain, where I boarded a ferry to cross the Strait of Dover (Pas de Calais) of the English Channel (la Manche) to Calais, Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France. I stayed here for one day, then I went to Lille, Nord, Hauts-de-France, where I also stayed for one day. After my two days in the Hauts-de-France region, I took the SNCF train to Gare du Nord in Paris, Île-de-France. I stayed in Paris for one week and I also visited Puteaux, Hauts-de-Seine, Île-de-France, which is just west of Paris.
After Paris, I took the RER ‘A2’ commuter train line from Châtelet–Les Halles station to Fontenay-sous-Bois, Val-de-Marne, Île-de-France, which is a suburb to the east of Paris . I stayed here for half a week, after which I returned to Paris. From Gare de Lyon in Paris I took the SNCF train to Gare de Marseille-Saint-Charles in Marseille, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. From here I went to Aubagne, Bouches-du-Rhône, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
I stayed at Aubugne for one week, after which I made my way back to Gatwick Airport via Marseille, Paris, Calais, Dover, and London. At Gatwick Airport I boarded my return flight to Canada and so ended my journey to Europe.
Some people are quite adept at travelling. No matter which country they may find themselves in, they would still be able to make their way back home. As the saying goes, “Travel is broadening.”
Since I have accumulated literally thousands of pictures throughout the years, here are some pictures of Europe from my own collections. I have pictures of every country in Western Europe except for Andorra and San Marino, but these are really small countries. I don’t have pictures for every country in Eastern Europe either. Since the fall of Communism in 1989, a number of countries have been broken up into numerous smaller countries, especially the former Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia was not a part of the Soviet Bloc but the language there is Slavic, just like in most of Eastern Europe.

In the first picture are American fashion models Kendall Jenner from the reality TV series Keeping Up with the Kardashians and Gigi Hadid on the Pont des Arts in Paris, Île-de-France, in 2015. This pedestrian bridge spans the Seine River and connects the Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois neighbourhood of the 1st arrondissement on the north side to the Monnaie neighbourhood of the 6th arrondissement on the south side. Since 2008 the custom in Paris was for lovers to attach padlocks onto the bridge and then throw the padlock key into the Seine River to symbolize their love for each other. In 2015 city workers removed over one million “love locks” from the bridge weighing 45 tons. The new railings on Pont des Arts have glass panels which are not suitable for attaching padlocks. The love locks on Pont de l’Archevêché at Île de la Cité were also removed. Over the years, this fad has spread to other cities around the world. In New York City, NY, USA, lovers have been attaching love locks onto the Brooklyn Bridge Promenade.

In the movie Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), this bridge is where Peter Parker, a.k.a. Spider-Man (played by Tom Holland), saves the tourists from the Water Elemental.
