Hello, beautiful people and welcome back! This month, I thought I’d talk a bit about audiobooks. I wasn’t a fervent fan of audiobooks but this year, I tried listening to one and it’d changed everything; now I can clearly say that I’ve become an audiobook stan :D So in this article, I will show you how audiobooks can be very useful, especially if you’re a language learner, and why I just love listening to them. So without further ado, let’s get started!

Before we start, some things need to be mentioned first. Now, you may pick up an audiobook for different reasons and before you do so, and based on my experience, these observations should help you out before and while listening to whatever book you pick. If you’re a beginner at a language you chose to learn; start with short stories or fairy tales read by a narrator who’s a native speaker; that will prevent you from making pronunciation mistakes and you’ll understand the stories clearly. If you want to practice or better your language skills; pick any book you want but once again, make sure they’re narrated by a native speaker. If you want to listen to an audiobook for entertainment reasons and you have good knowledge of the language; the narrator’s accent won’t matter because you’ll understand what’s going on in the story anyway. Generally speaking, and personally, I’d go for narrators who are native speakers because the poor pronunciation and mistakes tend to be quite distracting. Also, big disclaimer, audiobooks will never replace physical books but in this article, I will demonstrate how they can make reading easier and practical!

As an English teacher, I hold this particular benefit of audiobooks near and dear to my heart. You see, not only you’ll practice your listening but you also will learn new words and how they’re pronounced, you can get actual examples that help you understand grammar rules better, and it can help memorize some phrases and idioms, and you’ll get more familiar with different accents and dialects. I recommend listening to The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett because the narrator (Karen Savage) does an incredible job when she changes her voice for each character and you’ll get to listen to her Yorkshire accent in all its glory!

Like I have mentioned above, I’ve started listening to audiobooks this very year and it all started with a book that I didn’t finish reading. I’d decided to read Jane Eyre for the second but I still had (and have) a lot of new books to dive into so I downloaded the audio version of the last chapters of Jane Eyre, and lo and behold, that was the moment when I fell in love with audiobooks! I noticed that doing so saved me a lot of time and that is perfect for avid readers. You can read an actual book and listen to another in parallel. Also, you can do something else while you’re listening to a book; you can draw or paint, workout, cook or bake… All that to say that audiobooks can save you a lot of time (especially when it comes to finishing a book quickly!) and allow you other activities that you can’t do while reading a physical book!

I can safely say that audiobooks are fun to listen to! But then it depends on which book you picked if it’s non-fiction well it can be quite boring (just my opinion!) But if it’s fiction, then there’s a high chance for it to be fun to listen to! Fairy tales and children classics are my number one go-to whenever I’m feeling down or I just want to be overwhelmed by cuteness: D

Not only listening to audiobooks makes it easier to get involved in the story but it also makes the characters feel more real! You sense that there’s a bond with some of them, and if you find the dramatic version of any book you’re listening to then you are greeted by different voice actors, with different tones and accents and personality!

Alright, I hope this article was useful to you in one way or another. I felt like I had to share with you my experience with audiobooks. I cannot add another point or else I will sound very redundant so I hope that I delivered a clear message all and all! Also, you may have noticed that this article isn’t that long, well, like mentioned above; I’ve started listening to audiobooks this year which means that there are still other aspects I need to discover with time!
