Hey beautiful hearters,

The back to school season has (unfortunately) come around in full swing! For the next couple weeks leading to September I will hopefully be uploading a bunch of back to school content for all of you lovely people to enjoy.

This one is for all the high school seniors who just graduated, and are about to take their leap into post-secondary life. I, myself, will be starting first year of university for the second time and thought I would share some tips and tricks. Everyone has their own experiences and opinions, but here are 6 things I wish I knew before starting university.

Some people think they need to bring every little thing with them to lectures, when really all you need is a laptop and maybe a notebook. Lecture halls can typically fit anywhere from 60 to 300+ students so you wonโ€™t have much desk space to begin with. Additionally, you will most likely be attending that specific class once a week. There is no need to carry a ton of things to break your back. Tip: A small bag or tote will do just fine.

All throughout high school, I used pens and paper to write down class notes. That all changed after the first day of post-secondary. As said before, lecture halls can literally contain hundreds of students. Donโ€™t exactly expect the professor to go back two slides so you can jot down the last paragraph. This point really depends on the individualโ€™s comfort and experience with note-taking, but my advice is to type as the professor talks, and use their slides as a reference in order to better understand what theyโ€™re teaching.

3. ๐‘ท๐’‚๐’„๐’Œ ๐’‡๐’๐’๐’… ๐’”๐’๐’‚๐’„๐’Œ๐’”

If you donโ€™t have time to pack, grab something on the way to eat or drink during the lectures. These classes can be three hours long! I can't stress enough on how important it is to make sure you fuel up so you can stay awake and focus during lectures. (Also, do not be shocked when you realize you are drinking 5 cups of coffee a day, it will be completely normal). Tip: carry spare coins with you to use for coffee or drinks so you don't blow your bank account.

Typically, professors may contact you via email about class syllabi a couple weeks before classes start. It will probably say you have three assignments due within the first two weeks. You do not need to start anything until your classes commence. The professor will sometimes extend the due date or even cancel things on the syllabus altogether. Tip: make sure to mark all your important deadlines in your calendar!

Better yet, do not buy brand new textbooks altogether! If you need textbooks, purchase a used one from an older student or get an online version of it. This will literally save you so much money because brand new textbooks from the campus bookstore are SO overpriced, and sometimes your professor will provide your class with a free .pdf version of your needed textbooks. Tip: wait until your professor actually says which version of a textbook is needed, as some get published differently.

Some people believe they will have no fun in uni because they will be so focused on studying; others may believe they will fail all their classes because they will be partying every weekend. It is really all about balance and responsibility. Going to parties is not going to kill your grades. Having fun is part of the self care process that no one talks about going into post secondary. Do not be afraid to have fun with people you meet. Tip: make goals to finish certain assignments and chapters before rewarding yourself with a party.

Well, there you have it. If you read this far, thank you! It also probably means youโ€™ll be starting post secondary very soon. I wish you all the best and hope you have a fun, successful and happy year.

Look out for some more back to school articles coming soon!
