Hello everyone!
I have literally just finished reading the novel "The Cruel Prince" by Holly Black, and I felt this urge to immediately start writing an article about it, in order to express my thoughts on the book.

Rating: 5/5

First of all, for those who don't know, "The Cruel Prince" is the first book from the trilogy "The Folk of the Air" written by Holly Black. The sequel is "The Wicked King" followed by "The Queen of Nothing" (which will be released on November 2019).

What is it about:

Jude was seven when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King.

To win a place at the Court, she must defy him–and face the consequences.

As Jude becomes more deeply embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, she discovers her own capacity for trickery and bloodshed. But as betrayal threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself.

My opinion:

I will try to express my point of view without giving any spoilers.

I fell in love with this book from the very first page till the last one. It made me feel so many things at the same time; it was an emotional rollercoaster. There is one thing I have to tell you: a lot of unforeseen events will take place, which is one of my favourite things about this book, is not as predictable as other young adult or fantasy novels.
Needless to say, it was certainly not one of these cases when you read a couple of pages, get bored and turn in or start doing sth else. Every chapter has its own magic and it just makes you want more.

Even if she's a human in the world of Faeries, I love how she's so brave, ambitious and determined to teach them they shouldn't treat her with condescendency. Jude is like a volcano, ready to burn the world alive. She was afraid and even lacked confidence sometimes, but did everything despite that. Jude does not wait for someone else to realise she deserves something and hand it to her. She just takes it.

Another intriguing character is Cardan, the youngest of king's Eldred sons, a selfish elitist who acts like he is the most important person in the whole world. But as we read, we discover there is someone else underneath the armour he built for himself. We learn that Cardan is cruel by necessity. He has plenty of issues and flaws, but in my opinion, they just make him more complex and more interesting.

And now, I'm going to finish this article by including some of my favourite quotes from the book:

“What could I become if I stopped worrying about death, about pain, about anything? If I stopped trying to belong? Instead of being afraid, I could become something to fear.”

“Because you’re like a story that hasn’t happened yet. Because I want to see what you will do. I want to be part of the unfolding of the tale.”
