Civil Rights

The fight for equality between whites and blacks was still being fought for. African Americans were standing up against the Jim Crow laws. They started going into 'white' areas and protesting. Eventually the government stepped up and got involved in 1964. President Johnson pushed on the Civil Rights Act through Congress. This act prohibited public discrimination and gave the Justice Department permission to sue states that discriminated against people due to sex, gender, race, and religion.
