Civil Rights
The fight for equality between whites and blacks was still being fought for. African Americans were standing up against the Jim Crow laws. They started going into 'white' areas and protesting. Eventually the government stepped up and got involved in 1964. President Johnson pushed on the Civil Rights Act through Congress. This act prohibited public discrimination and gave the Justice Department permission to sue states that discriminated against people due to sex, gender, race, and religion.


Equal Pay Act
In 1963, JFK established a law that made sure that no matter your gender, you are to be paid the same for doing the same amount of work.


The Vietnam War
The '60s were the midst of the Vietnam War, and America was divided, many wanted the war while others protested for peace. Many celebrities such as the Beatles, Janis Joplin , Bob Dylan, and more were protesting for peace, and were making songs against the war.

The word hippie was initially created in the 1940s. Hippies typically spoke out against the Vietnam War. Hippies were seen as the outcasts of society

For women there were lots of a-line dresses, patterns, bell bottom jeans.




There were lots of flared heel boots, and saddle shoes


Men
Men wore a lot of patterned or colored tight fitting button up shirts tucked into flared trousers.


Another casual shirt option were turtlenecks


Men often wore Chelsea boots or a basic dress shoe
