Hello there!

I don't know about you, but I like to declutter my closet twice a year, once right before classes start and once before spring comes. Somehow, half of July has already gone by (like how ??) so I thought that it was a great idea to post this article this time around.

You will probably go shopping for back to school soon, so wouldn't it be a great idea to make some space in your closet before adding more pieces? Also, during this process, you might re-discover certain pieces you didn't remember you had, which will prevent you from spending money on items that you already own, or at least very similar ones.

If you are interested in a "Back To School: Fashion Shopping Guide" let me know by reacting to this article with a 💯 and that might be my next article as part of the Writers Team!

Getting ready to start

Let's be real. Although the end-result is very satisfying and you will feel very productive once you are done, the process might not be the most fun. So to get into the right mindset, here are a few things I suggest you do before starting decluttering your closet!

Put on some comfy clothes
The best way to encounter this activity is to be comfortable so change into your loungewear or some comfy workout clothes and put your hair up!

Background noise
The process might feel endless, so I find having some background noise key! Maybe you could put on Netflix, but if you think you'll get too distracted and will end up not working on your closet, you could either put on a show or movie you watched several times or simply put on a great playlist.

Another good idea is to look up videos on youtube of people decluttering their closets so that you feel inspired and motivated to keep going!

Another way to motivate yourself to start is by finding some inspiration online! Here I will leave some for you!

Decluttering questions

There are some questions you can ask yourself in order to make this process easier for you:

  • Do I love it?
  • Do I wear it? (When was the last time?)
  • If I were at a store, would I buy it again?
  • Does it fit?
  • Does it project the image I want to project?

The last one is the most important one in my opinion. Sometimes we have clothes that don't make us happy or they just don't portray us the way we want to show ourselves to the world! So it is key to keep in mind this while going through your clothes and deciding what's worth keeping and what's not.

Search up organization ideas for problematic areas

If you are trying to organize your closet but you find that some items are giving you a hard time, or maybe you don't think you are taking the most advantage of your space, the internet is your best friend! Search and you will find lots of ideas of how to fold clothes in order to save space, how you store belts efficiently, etc. So don't get discouraged if a certain category is driving you crazy, look up some closet hacks, I'm sure you will find some that work for you and your space!

Keep, donate, sell

While purging your closet, remember that you have more choices other than keeping them or throwing them away. The whole idea of decluttering your closet is to keep what you need and "get rid" of the rest so that you have more space to fill with the essentials you are missing. However, you can "get rid" of those items in a few different ways, such as:

  • Donating, which will make it easier for you to let go of some pieces, as you know somebody else will be able to give it a better use)
  • Selling, which can be an extra bonus and motivation

I have a designated space in my closet for the pieces I'm unsure whether to keep or not. But the rule is, if the next decluttering comes and I haven't worn them, they have to go!

Invite your friends over

This might sound random to be included in this article but this is what I mean by this: Once you have decluttered your closet, you will end up with a bag full of clothes you don't want anymore. Why don't you encourage your friends to declutter their closets as well, and then you can all get together to go through everyone's stuff and see if you can find some items a home? I sometimes do that with my friends and it is actually really fun!

That's it for today's article! I didn't want to include a step-by-step guide on how to declutter your closet because I'm sure most of you already have a method: emptying your whole closet, going section by section or category by category. That's why I wanted to bring to you some other useful information! I hope you enjoyed this article and that it was helpful and inspiring for you to declutter your closet!

As always, feel free to message me if you want to leave a suggestion for my future articles or simply if you just want to talk to someone ♡

Thank you for taking the time to read this, love you
