There was (or is) a possible time in your life when you threw your hands in the air and said “I’m done! I want a change!”

Sometimes this relates to healthy eating, a new clothing style, making friends or dropping toxic ones, or maybe the simplest, yet most complicated one:

“I just want to be happy with myself!”

Or maybe it’s all of the above. That’s what I’m going to discuss with you today, making a major lifestyle change.


1 | Understand why you’re doing this

Why is it you what to drastically change your life?

If you don’t have a passionate reason, you won’t stick with the things you wish to change.

Make a list of each thing you want to change, and under each item, write reasons.

[Example:]

Change: I want to eat healthier.

Why:

  • I want to feel better
  • I want to like the foods I eat
  • I want my digestion to improve
  • I want to lose weight
  • I want to help save the planet
  • I want my kids to grow up strong and healthy and for me to set a good example

You can do this with every change. If you don’t know why you want to do it, why would you stick with it?


2 | Understand it will be difficult

Switching your life overnight is no small hurdle.

If you wake up one day, decide you want to quit your job and become your own boss, workout five days a week, go vegan, meditate, and use less electronics; it can be hard.

For some people, this intense shift works and it’s the only way they will stick with it. Others, it needs to happen more gradually.

Sit and think about what method would work well for you.

Can you immediately become a vegetarian? Or do you want to have meatless weeks or weekends? It’s all up to you, and no one else can tell you how to change your habits.

And if you try one way and you fall back to your old habits, try the other way. If you are determined to make this change, you should let nothing and nobody stop you.

Get some help, if you want. Talking about the difficulties you’re having with your change with someone who will listen and not judge you.


3 | Understand you won’t see necessarily see immediate results

Sometimes with meditation or eating healthy or exercising, we want to see results quickly, and that isn’t always the case.

To make a sustainable change, you have to keep at it — especially if this is something you want to keep doing for the rest of your life.

Now it’s different with changing your style or your friends. But you might continue to gravitate towards old clothes or toxic friends because it feels safe and inside your comfort zone.

Keep an eye out for behaviors or situations that cause you to revert and try to remove yourself from those situations or distract yourself from those behaviors.

It’s all about paying attention to your body and your mind. You control your mind and body, not the other way around.

4 | Understand that people might not understand

Some people might have seen you previously try to reach a goal and fail. Maybe they contributed to the failure.

If you’re having a bad day, a friend might encourage you to not exercise that day. “You deserve the day off,” they might say. “Let’s just lie on the couch and binge pizza and soda.”

It can be hard to say no, because even if you do, that person might not understand and get angry.

This has nothing to do with you. This is them comparing themselves to you bettering yourself and projecting their own insecurities on to you.

If they continue to not understand why you’re doing what you’re doing and try to persuade you to stop; it might be time to reevaluate the relationship. See if they continue to contribute to your life, or if they might be holding you back.


5 | Understand you can mess up, and it’s okay

You aren’t going to be perfect all the time.

If you’re trying to change your style, you might accidentally go grocery shopping in sweats when you weren’t planning on it.

You might fall asleep and forget to meditate.

It’s all about messing up, accepting that you did and it’s alright, and trying again. Most people think if they flip the switch, it can’t be flipped back.

What makes us human is failing and trying again, despite what the media, our friends, our family, our job, or our minds say to us.

You are worthy. You are deserving. You are forgiven. And You are loved.
