“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”
~ Oscar Wilde

Hey loves,
Discovering who I am and being true to myself is something that I am continuing to work on. As I am growing and changing, I am discovering more ways that I can be truly myself; the creative and crazy person that I am. So, below I've shared some tips that have helped me on this journey. I hope they help you on your journey of self-discovery.
Enjoy!

Hobbies and Passions

“Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind.”

Finding a space or activity where you can let go and just be yourself is very important. Finding a hobby or passion where you don't have to worry about what other people think of you can help you lower any barriers that you might have put up to protect yourself and fit in with the expectations of what everyone else thinks you should be like. Whether this be theatre, sports, book club or art class, find a safe space that brings you happiness and where you can truly be yourself.

Social Media

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Social media is full of people leading seemingly perfect lives. We just need to remember that this isn't their whole life! They are human too, they have downs as well as ups. The supposed perfection that many people project on social media is false. You don't have to look like all of those influencers to be beautiful and worthy of great things. To help you separate reality from lies of perfection, I would recommend either taking a break from social media or cleansing your profiles, only following accounts that make you happy instead of insecure. Something I did that really helped was reassessing my own reasons for being on social media = did I want to make everyone think I was living this perfect life, or just share things that I liked and made me happy?

True Friendships

“A friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself-and especially to feel, or not feel. Whatever you happen to be feeling at any moment is fine with them. That's what real love amounts to - letting a person be what he/she really is.”
~ Jim Morrison

This took me long time to truly realise. It is very difficult to be yourself if you are surrounded by people who are pulling you down, judging you and criticising you. Surround yourself with people who make you feel happy, who you feel comfortable being yourself around. These are people who will support you in your choices, help you when you are down and be proud instead of jealous when you succeed. Having this support system was vital to me in gaining the confidence to be myself.

Self-love

“Imperfection is beauty, madness is genius and it's better to be absolutely ridiculous than absolutely boring.”
~ Marilyn Monroe

How can you be yourself when you don't love who you are? I know finding self-love can be a long and difficult process, one that I am going through myself. However I found that once I started letting go of other people's expectations of me, I started to love who I actually was more. Then, almost without realising, I began to be more myself. Being constantly surrounded by images and messages of what people should look like and say makes it hard to be yourself, but I am committed to find who I truly am outside of this influence. I have included a link below to an article I wrote to help you with this.

Strengths and Weaknesses

“Find out who you are and do it on purpose.”

You cannot possibly be incredible at every single thing you do. That's okay! That's good, even! This just makes you a balanced person. Don't be afraid to admit what your weaknesses are, but also don't be afraid to show your strengths! Everyone is a unique mosaic of different skills and talents, show these to the world. They are part of what make you who you are.

Be Brave

“Follow your inner moonlight; don’t hide the madness.”
~ Allen Ginsberg

It takes a lot of courage to go against what everyone else expects of you. To truly find who you are, sometimes you're going to have to do the opposite of what people say you should do or be. That's okay! Everyone's journey is different and once you take the first step, I promise you it will get a lot easier. Once you step outside the box, you can look around you and discover what it is that makes you, you.

Finding Joy

“Follow your heart, listen to your inner voice, stop caring about what others think.”
~ Roy T. Bennett

The crazy thing is, when you let go of others expectations of you and stop trying to be a certain way, you will end up being yourself. Instead of focusing on what other people want or the way you should look, focus on yourself. What makes you happy? Who makes you happy? If you hold onto those things above all others, you can hold joy in your heart and travel the journey of discovering your self.

That's all for now, thanks so much for reading!
I hope this article helped you on your journey to finding yourself and unleashing yourself to the world.
