Hi, all! As always, this is @gypsophiliet, Abby. I offer an apology to you for my lack of articles over a while, due to my persistent illness and increasing school workload. I am now in 9th grade, which is significantly advanced in the energy and time it demands than other classes. Because of this, I have had to change the way I handle study sessions, and have come to know what an ideal study session is, which, when acted upon, will boost grades and improve usual productivity.

A study session will be defined as a time period in which you study, ending when your work for the day is complete or when you lose your momentum. It may be for your homework, for your exam preparation, for your leftover work etc. However, there are some key rules that must be assumed when approaching the various components of a normal study session. When these rules will be acquired in the correct and most positively affecting way, then there is no doubt that a successful study session will be in the work which will, undoubtedly, benefit you hugely.

Below, I will be writing down the elements of a study session, and the principal tips to accomplish under each heading for a productive study session. I sincerely hope that this article is of help to you. If you have any further inquiries or just want to chat, do not be reluctant to send me a postcard!

When you want to put a positive study session in action, the suitable time must be chosen, as well as the reasonable setting and environment. These will enable you to work excellently, and also encourage you to surpass in your work.

Here are the two statements you must keep in mind when desiring to recognize the time when you should study for the most productive result.

  • The time when your productivity is unexampled. Such a time during the day should be chosen, which you would call your ‘prime’ i.e., the time when your abilities and capabilities are at their best. Firstly, you must select whether you study best during the day or during the night. Now, secondly, the hours that encourage good results during the day or night, whichever you selected, must be ascertained. Thirdly, select the hours upon the basis of how much time you will presumedly need to complete your work. Choose the hours during which you are most productive.
  • The time when you do not have other responsibilities. Opt for the time when you do not have more significant duties to conclude, the time when you will not be expected to have to do something else as opposed to studying. This will allow you to study without anxiety that you have another task to do as yet, and you will focus solely on your work only.

An ideal study setting should largely be based upon the material of the following bullets.

  • A setting which is free of distractions. You should be in a place where there is no object that will attract you and distract you from the work at hand. Distractions can be electronics, books, noises, food etc – obviously, anything that will demand your attention. Such distractions should be immediately eliminated.
  • A setting consisting of items that improve your studying. These are not required necessarily but can be of assistance to your work. These items may be plants, distraction-free music, books related to your work, helpful study apps etc. Remind yourself to not distract yourself with these items – rather use them to your own advantage.

An ideal environment for studying should be such that ameliorates your motivation and inspiration, refreshes you, and permits you to study highly productively. Remove the objects that stand in the way of productive studying and add the objects that equip you for effective studying.

Now, when you have established your time, setting and environment, it is time to calculate what you actually will be studying during your study session. I divide this part as the writing down, the prioritizing and the further verifying.

The writing down part simply is composed of you noting down what is to be accomplished. Use a notebook, page, sheet, post it, software, whatever is most useful to you, and write down what you wish to do during this study session. I write it down as subject and what I have to study in said subject, but you can write it down the way the matter is assigned to you.

Prioritization can be on any basis, the known ones are –

  • According to importance. The most important work will be done first.
  • According to urgency. The most urgent task will be done first.
  • According to unpleasantness. The most unpleasant task will be done first.
  • According to easiness. The easiest task will be done first.

In each of these, the highest of the spectrum will be done in the beginning, and the rest will follow in the same order, with the least of the given spectrum being done last.

The further verifying part is comprised of reviewing the list and its prioritization, and carefully confirming the authenticity of the list. You may discover that a particular work does not need to be done, or has been written wrongly. You may discover that you have a shortage of time, and then you will erase the most satisfactory, for that purpose, task. So, further verifying is a way to perfect your list.

Starting a study session can be very difficult, as fighting an urge of procrastination and the desire to do something else can be very hard to do. To pass through this want, a boost of motivation is needed. Once you have begun a task, starting on the others will seem easier. But, how to step over that stone and begin a task, which will approach the other tasks continuously? Here are a few ways –

  • Begin with a task that seems enjoyable. You will want to do that piece of studying, and once you have begun it, it will, obviously, be easier to start on the other tasks. This task may be anything – i.e, you may enjoy doing a small task, in which case you should begin with a task that will demand a tiny amount of time. In my case, I like to begin with something I have to write.
  • Break each task into smaller tasks. Once you have divided each portion, the list will appear a lot easier, as you will not have collective, large tasks, but smaller, easier to complete tasks.
  • Do something that encourages you to start. To get that burst of motivation, you should put in action something that motivates you. It may be eating or drinking something if you are feeling tired. It may be scrolling through motivational quotes and posts, but without getting distracted. It may be putting music on in the background. Do something that is efficient in encouraging you to start, and makes you want to start.

Here is the part where you do your actual studying. Approach your studying in a way that makes you learn most effectively and does your work to be done efficiently. You should act on the following tips for a productive study session.

  • Take breaks if breaks are helpful for you.
  • Use study techniques to apply the phrase ‘study smart, not hard’ in your studying.
  • Find out your learning style and adapt it when memorizing.
  • Use the internet and the apps it provides in a correct way.
  • Write neat notes, and attempt assignments well.
  • Eat and drink something fresh.

After your work has been completed, it’s time to wind up your material. Firstly, you should check your checklist, so as to see if you have completed the whole of your matter or not. After this, you should clear off your desk or study spot, and organize your work for the next day. Keep check of your books, notebooks, stationery, to see whether all is complete or not. Pack your bag, and always revise your to-do list, so that no work is missed out on. You have to lay out the material that is to be revised later on. After this, your study session has ended.

Thank you for reading! Your love is something I am very, very grateful for. Thank you for the hearts on the two articles that have been uploaded on the We Heart Editor profile and furthermore, thank you for 3k!
