What do I think beauty is?

If you had asked me this question when I was 14 my answer would have been completely different than now.

Beauty for me used to be perfectly applied make-up that covered up all of my so-called flaws, skinny legs and a flat belly, perfect skin and long shiny hair.

The reason that this used to be my idea of beauty is that our society / the media has a very clear beauty standard for males and females. Females are expected to be skinny an have tall legs with a gap in between. They are expected to have long shiny hair. Males are expected to be these tall muscular humans with a sixpack and perfect smile.

Why this is our beauty standard disgusts me. My idea of beauty has changed immensely over the past 4 years. I used to be influenced by the beauty standard of the media, I used to think that I had to look like that and I felt so uncomfortable in my own skin. I'm not tall, I'm not super skinny and I don't have a thigh gap. But that doesn't mean that I'm not beautiful.

My idea of beauty

beauty is differences. Differences in race, in religion, in sexual orientation, in dreams and ambitions. Beauty is accepting who you are and instead of wanting to change your so-called flaws accepting them, and realising that they make you who you are.
Beauty is a real smile on your face. Mental beauty is so much more important than physical beauty.

Dear girls, you are perfect just the way you are. Your eyes sparkle when you show your happy smile. Your freckles are adorable and make you unique. Your body is a temple and you should treat it with respect, you should not feel the need to change every aspect of it. If you want to wear make-up, go for it! But don't cover up all the aspects that make you unique. Try to use it in a way that enhances your beauty.

Dear boys, you don't have to be this muscular human being with a sixpack. You don't have to hide your emotions because you're afraid it might make you 'less of a man'. You are a human being with feelings and you are perfect just the way you are.

Dear boys and girls, gender roles are bullshit. Do whatever you want, wear whatever you want and be whoever you want.

beautiful, beauty standards, and be yourself image beautiful, beauty, and bodies image

Beauty comes from within. Accept yourself and the people around you. You don't have to try to be a picture perfect person, you already are one, in your own way. Please don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Ditch the beauty standards and just be yourself
