Hey loves,

Anxiety is something that comes in many shapes and forms and can affect people from all walks of life in different ways. Personally, I have struggled with anxiety for the past five years and only feel as though it is in the past year that I have made some progress with both understanding my systems and learning to overcome them. I am in no means a medical professional in any manner, so I urge you to seek professional help if this is something that is severely impacting your life. I have collated these tips in the hope that I can help those of you that do get anxious, to help feel more like yourself.

1. Make a schedule

I often find myself getting stressed and overwhelmed when I have several things that I need to do. Sometimes I worry so much about getting these things done that I can’t actually do them. To help this, I make a schedule for the day. I write down the things that I need to do at certain times throughout the day. That way, I can get what I need to get done, done without being frozen by worry.

2. Get lots of sleep

This may seem obvious or overstated, but I can’t stress the importance of this enough. When you don’t get enough sleep, you put your body under stress, basically making yourself more prone to anxiety. The Sleep Foundation recommends between 8-10 hours for teenagers and 7-9 hours for adults per night.

3. Regularly do exercise that you enjoy

Exercising releases endorphins that will make you feel better and sleep better, reducing stress. I also feel that it is important to partake in an exercise that you enjoy. If you don’t enjoy what you are doing, it will be that much harder to maintain. Everyone prefers different forms, so don’t give up until you find one that suits you! Suggestions include team sports such as soccer, individual sports such as tennis, cardio activities like swimming, going to the gym or group classes including dance or pilates.

4. Look after your health

Beyond exercising, make sure you get enough water and focus on eating healthy, or healthier. I know it can be difficult or seem overwhelming to make healthier food decisions, but if you start with small changes, the process can seem a lot easier. Finding someone to do it with also makes the process more fun! You’ll find you have more energy, and feel happier, too.

5. Breathe

Whenever I feel anxious, I focus on deep breathing and releasing the tension in my body. Breathe in slowly from your nose, beginning in your stomach and working your way up to your chest for 3 slow counts. Then breathe out slowly from your mouth for 4 slow counts and focus on the sensation of the air flowing out of your lungs. Do this as many times as it takes to feel calm.

6. Write down what’s on your mind

I often feel as though all my thoughts, ideas and what I have to do cloud together in my head and threaten to overwhelm me. Even if it’s just things such as I should call my friend, I need to pick up tomatoes, I should buy bathers before this summer. By writing all the notes that are running around in my head, I feel much calmer and like I can tangibly see all my ideas and therefore act on them.

7. Take some personal time

There is nothing wrong with taking out some time to do something entirely for yourself. In fact, it is something you should be doing! This is different for every person and could be anything from painting your nails, watching that new episode, trying that facemask. Put aside a little time each day to focus on you. This will help to feel more centered and less easily overwhelmed.

8. Go into nature

This may not be something that works for everyone, but I beg for you to keep an open mind. Whenever I spend time in nature, it’s like the plants drain away my anxious feelings and the breeze blows away my negativity. It’s also fun just to go out and explore.

9. Listen to music

Music is how feelings sound. Cheesy, I know, but there must be a reason that I listen to sad songs when I’m sad and happy songs when I’m happy? Listening to music helps me feel and release my emotions, as well as making me feel like I’m not alone. I believe music has the power to calm your mind and entrance your soul, taking you far away from your anxieties and worries.

10. Spend time around people you care about

This could be friends, family, or a partner. Make sure you spend time with those that you love, that make you laugh, that you feel comfortable with. You are not alone. The people who care about you are there for you and will listen if you feel you need to talk. This is not a weakness. This is an incredible strength, one that should be cherished.

That’s all for now, thanks so much for reading. Please seek help if you are struggling with anxiety or other mental health symptoms. Remember, you are not alone.
