ONCE UPON A TIME... there was a little girl with big dreams

Since I was a young child I have always held this incredible fascination and love for Spanish culture, particularly that of Spain. Being Italian however, as you may imagine, it drove my family crazy * laughs * I'd listen to Spanish music although I couldn't understand a single word and my singing along sounded more like a bunch of random whale sounds than beautiful singing in the very romantic Spanish language * laughs again * but nonetheless that was me: a little seรฑorita princesa always dancing to the rhythm of her dreams.

Impossible wasn't in my vocabulary

Another little fact regarding my love for Spain, I've been absolutely in love with Enrique Iglesias since I was like four years old (second after Prince William, I was entirely convinced when i was little that I was going to marry him so that i could become a real-life official Princess), but I mean, can I get an applause for my commitment to Enrique?

gif, girl, and wink image
and.. I don't know what happened there with William...

Anyway, from the trusty (not so trusty) media world of movies, I quickly learned that Spanish girls always wore hoop earrings and a lot of red and glittery things with their hair pulled back in a tight wavy ponytail with a ribbon and/or down in loose waves (please note: i am not stereotyping)... so can you guess what my childhood style was? Obvious. * laughs * so the point of my little flashback story is that I truly, really, seriously, whole-heartedly believe that my soul is Spanish! (Scuzi Italia).

Now fast forward years later to 2018, and here I am - living and working in Spain!! But this dream didn't come easy for me. Getting here took a lot of strength, courage, risk taking, and finding myself, which was not a smooth journey. But here I am and I couldn't be happier or prouder of myself for achieving this step in my life. It just goes to show that if you have a dream, you don't always need an explanation of why it's your dream or how you're going to get there, you just have to keep that dream close to your heart and keep believing in yourself and working hard towards it. I mean, I came here from Canada... the possibility of me moving all the way from there to here (Spain) seemed impossible to everyone (and at times myself too), but that didn't persuade me against what I wanted. At this point, I would like to take the opportunity to say that if you have a dream, don't give up on it! If along the way you realize that it isn't your dream anymore or it no longer seems right for you (now that you're older and more mature), that's okay too! Whats meant to be is going to be, just sometimes it takes us a little longer to figure out exactly what that may be. Don't ever lose the light of hope, it will guide the way.

Step 1: Moving to Spain - Complete!

Sรญ! I got myself to Spain, which required me to complete extensive education. So on the topic of accomplishing dreams, I want to also add that university was an absolute hell storm for me (and is for most people, study wise at least). It flipped me upside down fifty times just to spin me around in circles fifty times more. I grew so confused and so lost.. and I didn't figure any of it out until my final year. So for those of you who are new to university or who are still going through it, YOU ARE GOING TO GET THAT DEGREE! I believe in you.

quotes, life, and crazy image pink, wallpaper, and you can image

None of us have it figured out right away or ever really do; it's called "the journey of life" to sound philosophical for a brief second here. As for university, it's literally all trial and error with a gourmet side of many Idgaf's and "I did the best I could and thats that for that" for dessert * laughs * but you can and you will surpass this stage in your life. Trust me. My dream isn't concrete yet, not set in a stone of certainty. I'm definitely here for a year but in order to stay here long term I have to keep working towards my dream and keeping my faith that things will work out how I want them to. Finger and toes permanently crossed! But no matter what, I know I won't give up - "It isn't in my blood."

Step 2: Visiting Barcelona - Complete!

November 1st was a holiday in Spain so I took this opportunity of a long 4-day weekend to spend in Barcelona!! My best friend/soulmate/other half surprised me by coming along too, which shout-out to him, made it so much more magical and special for me. I actually had no idea he was coming * laughs *. When I finally arrived at the hotel to check-in (that 8 hour train ride was a killer, oh my gosh, but so worth it) he was standing in the lobby waiting for me * laughs again * That is so typically him.

Temporarily removed
I was honestly the most surprised I have ever been and completely ecstatic (and not attuned to the many stares we were receiving in our surroundings * giggles *)

Of course being the two adventurous, active souls that we are, we had to get out there as soon as we could aka dropped off our suitcases and began our exploration. We never have any plans or even a map * laughs *. Instead we pick a direction and go; it's much more exciting this way. Obviously like any other tourist we have landmarks and attractions that we want to see and thank god for iphone GPS for that or we'd be hopelessly lost.

Here are a few photos from our first adventure out:

This area overwhelmed me with so much emotion.. I can't put the feeling into words but it made me feel like all my struggles were worth something.

Then came the real magic...

How do I even begin to describe how absolutely magical the Font Magica (Magic Fountain) was! No wonder it's called what it is! I was so stunned and overwhelmed by so many feelings that I couldn't contain all of the emotion, and so (surprise, surprise) it flooded out of me in the form of tears (but happy ones). I just couldn't believe that I was finally in Barcelona, and with one of my favourite humans too. I couldn't believe that after all the things I've been through, I finally made it here.

Experience it for yourself with this short clip:

Note: They had different songs playing for each little show

The held back pride I've been feeling towards my achievements and the pushed away acceptance of the amount of struggle I endured all decided to come pouring out then and there. Having struggles with mental illness is not easy, to give an understatement... but somehow I kept finding the strength and courage to break through every dark storm that hit my path. And that... I'm not even sure how to explain it so I'll leave it at The Magic Fountain Show was breathtaking and way beyond being enchanting. If any of you end up in Barcelona, I highly recommend seeing this; you will not be disappointed!

Everything and More by Andrew Austin, Willa

More air wider wings more freedom for the things
More time more fun more dancing in the sun

Lyric Video Below:

Afterwards we did our own night walking tour of the city, which was (once again) breathtaking. The lights, the colours, the way the spot lights hit the curves, edges, and artistic detail of architectural landmarks.. the fairy lights strung across palm trees and walkways.. its magic and heaven and dreams combined on earth. So many cherished moments happened then... truly a night that's now etched in my memory as one of the best times of my life.

Day 2: Barcelona

It was a little cloudy and drizzly in the morning but that passed by noon. Our first stop was... Casa Batllo. It was so beautiful with a sense of gothic allurement that just completely took me in. I've been obsessed with the architecture of this building for so long but I have to say seeing it online and in books did not do the building justice in real-life! However * laughs * my photos and videos didn't turn out as professional looking as I strived for them to be because... * laughs * my child for a best friend/soulmate/other half kept photo and video bombing everything on purpose * laughs harder and shakes head *. Sometimes this boy drives me crazy, but in a good way. He keeps me laughing that's for sure!

Image by ๐“ฅ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ผ๐“ผ๐“ช Image by ๐“ฅ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ผ๐“ผ๐“ช
Managed to get a better shot at night

Casa Batllo, check! Then we hit the shopping streets! Both of us are kind of shopaholics (heh, understatement), but the stores in Barcelona?! You have everything! From brand name stores, commercial centres, specialty shops, boutiques, antique stores, classic touristy stuff... Barcelona definitely has something for everyone.

We spent our afternoon in the Gothic Quarter, where of course we saw the grand Cathedral of Barcelona. We've seen so many European cathedrals though * laughs * so we weren't as mesmerized or excited as some other tourists were...

Image by ๐“ฅ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ผ๐“ผ๐“ช Image by ๐“ฅ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ผ๐“ผ๐“ช

...BUT something special did occur that made the cathedral scene something that touched both of our hearts and left us speechless in the company of our embrace. A very common thing in Europe are street musicians, and there was one musician in front of the cathedral playing the melody to the song Dusk til Dawn by Zayn and Sia.. and let me tell you, this was no amateur player. He had background accompaniment and it was just... it brought me to tears (once again). This song in particular is not only naturally beautiful in melody but it is a song that I've always connected to my best friend/soulmate/other half from the very first time i've heard it.

"I don't know how it gets better than this, you take my hand and drive me head first... fearless "

Here's a little video of this moment:

*Note: It was really 20 degrees Celsius.. we have no idea why everyone was dressed so warmly * laughs *

So being there with him, in front of a beautiful Gothic Cathedral in Barcelona, my dream city for so long, hearing the instrumental to this song... one word: magic. Second word: tears. Being Italian though, * laughs * i'm inherently superstitious so of course I thought this was a sign as well... if you get what I'm getting at...

Hit the lights!

Now for our night... * tries to think of a way to accurately yet appropriately describe this night * ... * laughs * let me just say that Barcelona nightlife is unbelievable, plus certain moments that night made the overall memory even more of a smile-at, blush-worthy memory for me.

Fun and romance were definitely in the air that night...

This night needed a... you guessed it, song for emphasis

Day 3: Barcelona & Barceloneta Beach

After my travel companion gorged at breakfast and I had my much needed dose of caffeine of like 4 cortados (an Italian expresso drink if you're not familiar), we took off to find an English bookstore which coincidentally was on the way to another of our must-see sights: Parc Gรผell. There at the bookstore... I kind of went a little crazy * laughs * English books aren't easy to come across in smaller town Spain.

emma watson, beauty and the beast, and disney image
I love reading...

Once we got to Parc Gรผell (it took us an hour) we were like, "....seriously? really? are you actually kidding me right now?" because the park was "full" meaning they weren't allowing any more people in (who would've thought you needed tickets to get into a public park?). Somehow though, and I don't know how * laughs *, Marco talked his way into the security guards letting us in (he's fluent in Spanish, a huge envy of mine). I have no idea what he said * laughs * but I don't even care because it worked! And I was not at all disappointed in the mosaics of Gaudรฏ, one of my favourite architects! (Also the views were... yes, breathtaking once again).

Image by ๐“ฅ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ผ๐“ผ๐“ช Image by ๐“ฅ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ผ๐“ผ๐“ช Image by ๐“ฅ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ผ๐“ผ๐“ช Image by ๐“ฅ๐“ช๐“ท๐“ฎ๐“ผ๐“ผ๐“ช

After we got our fill of the amazing Gaudรฏ we just had to go to the beach, regardless of it being nearly 2 hours of a walk away * laughs * but luckily neither of us mind walking and actually enjoy it. It was nice just walking next to him and talking, seeing the daily life of an average Barcelonian in the non-tourist neighbourhoods and streets (no idea if Barcelonian is an actual term or if I made it up * laughs again *). Walking around like this let me get a real feel for the city and it also helped confirm that Barcelona is truly the city I want to end up in! Simply put, I fell completely and irrevocably in love with Barcelona.

On our way to the beach... oh hey, that's my name! * laughs *
Being from Canada... you can say I'm kind of, just a smidgen, obsessed with seeing palm trees...xD

Finally at Barceloneta Beach!

Here, we walked for hours alongside the shoreline, barefoot in the sand, hand in hand... and I'll leave it at that * blushes *

The other half... he totally did this to me!

The beach, back to the beach, it was gorgeous! The Mediterranean Sea is not at all like the oceans. The water is a such a clear sea blue and a lot calmer than the ocean is (at least the Atlantic, I've never seen the Pacific). We also went to little shops and stopped more than once for his gelato fix * laughs * he's pretty much addicted to it. The Port was a beautiful place to be as well, just be careful of the street sellers - although no police officer seems to care * laughs * but be careful in the sense that you don't get "ripped off". Some of them can be pretty persistent and sneaky with getting more money off of you so shop with a good eye!

We could've spent all day here

That evening we went to see a circus (Circo Magico), which I loved but my travel companion was the worst company to go to a circus with * laughs * just kidding. I adored his commentary, it made it much more entertaining.

The melody of this song is just perfect for my memory.

Later that evening we went out to a pretty fancy place for a sort of celebration dinner (not really sure what we were celebrating to be honest but we love excuses to dress up). We may have had one too many drinks * laughs * as our usual, but es bien, es bien. The night that followed was spent.. intimately in bliss.

All I can say is I'll never forget that night, or this trip, or Barcelona in general.

Final thoughts: Was I impressed?

Sร !!!!!!!!!!!!! I never understood it and still don't, but for whatever reason Barcelona has always been my dream destination, as I've mentioned. I fell in love with it before even experiencing it! So as you can imagine, finally being there, in Barcelona...

it was like walking on a cloud under the most beautiful starry night sky with a thousand shooting stars surrounding me.

Absolute Perfection. Enchantment. Romance. Three words I'd use to describe Barcelona and my time there.

This just proved to me that Disney all of these years was right: "If you can dream it, you can do it." Never forget that.

Barcelona is without a doubt or hesitation my favorite city. Not only will it cast a love spell upon you, it also has everything you could possibly want โ€“ beach.. shopping..history and sightseeing!

Magic is out there.

Always believe in yourself and have faith that someday you will be sincerely happy. There's nothing about you or that you did or didn't do that doesn't deserve happiness.

P.S. if you haven't guessed already, this was the most memorable trip I've been on.. and yes, if you're also wondering, me and my best friend/soulmate/other half travel companion are kind of sort of very much in love. * blushes *
