Ara was born in Busan and has an older sister. She had really strict parents who didn't approve her dreams and wanted her to be an Olympic gymnast, while all she wanted was to be a rapper. All throughout middle school and high school she used to participate in many competitions and won lots of trophies. However, as time passed by she started making music and stopped spending hours on end just practicing. She won her first second-place trophy and her parents made her an ultimatum, gymnastics or music. She chose to follow her dreams and pursue her music career and her parents kicked her out.
She spent some time on her sisters' house and one day she was scouted on the street, she was desperate so she agreed to audition for the company (JYP). Turns out it was one of the best decisions of her life. When she became a trainee she also became really close to Hana, because they both have had a rough life. She still doesn't talk to her parents, however, she has a really close relationship with her sister.
