Graduation. It's the one day we spend our entire lives preparing for.

Everyone graduates at some point. Whether that's from primary school, midway through high school, university, TAFE or otherwise. Everyone reaches a point in their life when they have to say goodbye to something that has been such an integral part of their lives for almost as long as they can remember.

As citizens of first world countries, we are so, so lucky. We have the right to education - to seek out whatever curiosities may quench our thirst for knowledge. We have so many opportunities that people in the developing world do not. And I know for a fact that I will forever be grateful that I was born in a place where education is seen as a right, and not a privilege.

In case you haven't already guessed - I graduated high school yesterday. The thirteen years of my schooling life - seven in primary school and six at secondary school - have come to a close. No more will I sit in a uniform, in a classroom, taking notes from a teacher on secondary subjects and listening as the help to prepare us for our futures. This era of my life is now over.

Of course, I still have my final exams to complete, which means the study doesn't stop just yet.

But in the scheme of things, they are far less significant that the milestone of yesterday. While they may help me get my foot in the door of a more direct avenue to my dream career, they will not define my entire life.

Leaving high school, on the other hand, is a marker that shows that I am progressing on the path that I have chosen to walk. I get to dictate my future now, thanks to my education and my understanding that life is what I make it - not what other people tell me it should be.

I've learnt a lot these past thirteen years - especially these past six in high school - and I know now that I am ready to move on. My time has come. I'm prepared to take that next step.

To all my fellow Australians who have also graduated this year - from whatever institution, course, or walk of life you have chosen: congratulations! Good luck with your exams, and I hope you get everything that you've wanted and worked for.

To everyone else who has graduated this year: we made it. I am so, so proud of you.

This may feel like the end but know that it isn't. This is just the beginning of a long and beautiful life - seize it by the horns and take it wherever you want to go.
