bonjour, everyone! this is my first article for the we heart it writing team!! so today, i will listing off my 10 favorite animated movies. if you've been following me for a while, you may know that i love animation. i watch animated flicks religiously and a lot of my favorite youtubers do animated story time videos. if you are a recent follower, then....yeah, i really really really like the medium. anyway, let's just get on with it!

10. mulan (Disney)

badass, disney, and gif image
ah, mulan. doesn't everyone love this film? i love the chinese atmosphere, the animation is great, mulan is a fantastic lead character, mushu is the best comic relief from disney, and the soundtrack is really really good! and if i may ask, do we really need a live action reboot that has a budget of $200 million, but no musical numbers? really, disney? but oh well, you do you boo, at least i have to animated source material.

gif and hercules image
ahhhh i love hercules!! the animation is splendid, the songs are fantastic, meg is one of my favorite disney heroines, pegasus is one of my favorite disney sidekicks, and hades is one of my favorite disney villains 😄 even though it's not historically accurate, it doesn't bother me because come on now, when IS disney accurate? but hercules and meg make a cute couple. it's definitely one of alan menken's best soundtrack and i just love the film!

8. aladdin (Disney)

disney, aladdin, and jasmine image
my former favorite Disney film! don't worry, i still love this film. after all, it IS on this list! a whole new world is of my favorite Disney songs, jasmine is my favorite princess, and her and Aladdin would probably have to be my favorite Disney couple!! they're so cute together 😍 this is also quite possibly Robin Williams' best role (may he rest in peace). the animation is gorgeous and Aladdin and jasmine's kiss on the balcony is my favorite Disney, well, kiss!

favorite quotes:

7. song of the sea (cartoon saloon)

animated, animation, and film image
this film is soooo underrated. it only came out in 2014! i hate that this movie merely got a limited release in north America because everyone should see this film. i think the biggest reason why i love this movie so much is because of the ocean aspect. I'm an Aquarius and since that sign is for water, I'm obsessed with the color blue and the sea. i know it sounds strange and it's a little hard to explain. but anyway, the animation is breathtaking, Saoirse is the absolute sweetest, and it has such a nice soundtrack!

favorite quotes:

come away, o human child, to the waters and the wild, with a fairy hand in hand. for the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.
- bronagh
my son, remember me in your stories and in your songs. know that I will always love you, always.

(it's not a musical, but it has a couple of original songs that are really good)

from the shell
the song of the sea
neither quiet nor calm
searching for love again
- bronagh, song of the sea
long, long we prayed
to hear the selkie song
and now we pray again
that her song will never end
- the daoine sídhe. dúlamán

6. kung fu panda (DreamWorks)

animated, animation, and dreamworks image
the ultimate don't judge a book by its cover film. i mean. wow. it's truly the beginning of the best movie trilogy. it has spectacular animation (especially when oogway ascends), great comedy, an good villain, and an amazing soundtrack, especially "oogway ascends"....have i mentioned how much i love that scene and score? it's so beautiful and heartbreaking to listen to. I proud of myself for learning how to play it on piano. oh, and Mr. Ping is a legend. i love that goose to death. also, did you know this movie turned 10 years old in June? a full decade! i just feel so old :(

favorite quotes:

look, I know you're trying to be all mystical and kung fu-y, but can you at least tell me where we're going?"
- po
yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. that is why it is called the present.
- oogway
- po
I'm not dying, you idiot! uh...dragon warrior.
- shifu
I'm not a big, fat panda. I'm THE big, fat panda!
- po

5. the emperor's new groove (Disney)

alpaca, crying, and funny image
and here is Disney's most funniest and quotable animated feature. gah it's such a great film. the comedy is, of course, hilarious, really good and fluid animation, a superb villain and sidekick, and my favorite Disney princess 😂 I'm glad this movie has a bit of a cult following because it didn't really do that well in theaters when it came out and Disney doesn't really do too much with it except sell a couple pins at Disneyland. i REALLY hope i can buy them soon since i go there constantly with my friends, but I'm broke just about half the time. all in all, if you like comedies and you haven't seen this movie, go see it. it's back on Netflix and I'm so happy! you won't be disappointed.

favorite quotes:

llama face!
- Cuzco
well, he ain't getting any deader!
- yzma
ah! demon llama!
- pacha
pull the lever, Kronk! wrong leverrrrr!

- yzma
oh, right, the poison. the poison for Cuzco. the poison chosen especially to kill Cuzco. Cuzco's poison.
- Kronk
I don't make deals with peasants!
- Cuzco

4. the road to el dorado (DreamWorks)

funny, el dorado, and miguel image
this is by far the most underrated DreamWorks movie. why did it flop at the box office? why does it have a 48% on rotten tomatoes?? it's such a good movie! the main leads, Tulio and Miguel, are hilarious and are the best comedic duo ever, the animation is super colorful and vibrant, a pretty threatening villain, and even though it's technically not a musical, the songs are great! most of them are sung by an Elton John voice over and I'm not really a fan of him, but still! my favorite would have to be "it's tough to be a god", which is actually the only song from the movie not sung by Elton John, but Miguel and Tulio. it's by far the best scene out of the movie, both with the visuals and musical number. the move is also on Netflix, so watch this one as well!

favorite quotes:

you drank seawater, didn't you?
- Tulio
I will cut you to ribbons.
- Miguel
the horse is a surprise.
- Tulio
all right. cuba!
- Miguel
he's a ruthless warhorse, not a poodle. come on, before he licks you to death.
- Tulio
like he said. stars. can't do it. not today.
- Miguel
as the...gods...command.
- tzekel-kan

favorite song lyrics:

el dorado on our plates
- Miguel, it's tough to be a god
never rebuff
I never rebuff a local feeling
no, my friend
- Tulio, it's tough to be a god
to terra incognita, we shall ride into history
- Elton John, the trail we blaze
I'd believe in anything were it not for you, showing me by just existing only this is you
- Elton John, without question

3. the prince of Egypt (DreamWorks)

Temporarily removed
jeez. talk about a powerhouse movie. and the film is turning 20 years old in December! ugh, where to start? it has mesmerizing animation, powerful musical numbers, a very compelling villain, and it's surprisingly really accurate to the original source material, which is the story of Moses from the book of exodus from the bible. the relationship between the title character, Moses, and the antagonist, Ramses, is just so cool to witness as the movie progresses. this prince of Egypt even won an Oscar: best original song for "when you believe"! yeah! even though it won that very special achievement, both the movie and song kind of got lost in time and not that many people talk about it. it's definitely the best non-Disney animated musical, so PLEASE go watch it on Netflix!! do a mini movie marathon with the emperor's new groove, the road to el dorado, and the prince of Egypt or somethin'!

favorite quotes:

but one weak link can break the chain of a mighty dynasty!
I do not know this god. neither will I let your people go.
- Ramses
believe, for we will see god's coming.
- Moses
look. look at your people, Moses. they are free.
- tzipporah
I know to whom I speak, Aaron.
- Miriam

favorite song lyrics:

hush now my baby
my still, love
don't cry
- yocheved, deliver us
sleep and remember
my last lullaby
so i'll be with you
when you dream
- yocheved, deliver us
there can be miracles
when you believe
- Miriam, when you believe
look at your life through heaven's eyes
- Jethro, through heaven's eyes
you who I called brother, how could you have come to hate me so?
- Ramses, the plagues

2. kung fu panda 2 (DreamWorks)

animal, animated, and animation image
and here we have it. my favorite dreamworks movie. the best kung fu panda film. the best animated sequel. the best MOVIE sequel. with the best non-Disney villain. with the best non-Disney score. that's right. i said it. to be frank, this became my favorite DreamWorks movie very recently. for whatever reason, I've been obsessing over the kfp trilogy (especially this one, of course) this year. listening to all 3 soundtracks, watching all 3 movies, you name it. well, then why do i believe this is the best kung fu panda movie? two words (which i just previously stated but whatever): antagonist. score. i won't spoil to much of it if you truly want to be surprised by it, but i highly recommend you watch the movie and listen to the soundtrack. it's not available on Netflix, sadly, but you're bound to find it somewhere. lord shen is amazing and i still love mr. ping. onto the honorable mentions!

favorite quotes:
(a lot of them are from shen, oops)

the only reason you are still alive is that I find your stupidity mildly amusing.
- shen
it's your parting gift, in that it will part you. part of you here, part of you there, and part of you way over there straining the wall!
- shen
your story may not have such a happy beginning, but that doesn't make you who you are. it is the rest of your story. who you choose to be.
- soothsayer
I'm your son.
- po
kill him! somebody kill him!
- shen
China will be mine.
- shen
stop being a wimp.
- tigress
you have a job to do...far from home, in a strange city filled with strange people, and strange noodles!
- Mr. ping

honorable mentions

*Ratatouille (Pixar) *

disney, gif, and ratatouille image
this film has a place in my heart because it’s my mom’s favorite Pixar film. she’s a chef, so I can definitely understand why she likes it. it great animation, wonderful characters (especially Colette), a nice soundtrack, and it always makes me hungry. ratatouille makes me want to go to Paris someday :).

the iron giant (warner bros.)

90s, anime, and cartoon image
it sucks this movie was a flop in theaters, but now it has a huge cult following! an impeccable blend between traditional and computer animation, memorable characters, good humor, and a really emotional message and ending. and dean is really cute. yeah.

kung fu panda 3 (DreamWorks)

animated, animation, and animations image
even though I would say this is the weakest kung fu panda movie since the villain and soundtrack don't even hold a candle to what was presented to us in the second movie, I can't help but still really like this one. it makes my heart all warm and fuzzy and this might have to be the best film from the trilogy when it comes to animation. it's really hard to confirm it when you have scenes like oogway ascending in the first one (sorry, had to mention it again) and the fall of gongmen palace in the second (i didn't really discuss it that much when I was talking about kfp2, but it's truly an awesome scene), but the scene when Po and oogway talk in the spirit realm is breathtaking!!! just look at the gif above!

the breadwinner (cartoon saloon)

animated, film, and gif image
this is the most recent animated movie on this list. which came out in the states in November 2017. and I was pretty excited when this movie was announced, seeing how this is from the same studio that produced a song of the sea. parvana is such a sweet lead character who deserves nothing but happiness, the animation is great, and it was pretty cool to see the studio make a movie that takes place in the middle east, rather than Ireland, which is where their previous two films took place.

Anastasia (don bluth)

anastasia, gif, and pretty image i suppose this don Bluth movie belongs to Disney now? huh. i don't know, the whole Disney/Fox deal is kind of complicated to me. but the animation is sensational. the songs are great. rasputin is a pretty badbutt villain. and i forkin' love Bartok.

1. the hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney)

disney, fire, and gif image
surprise, surprise, my favorite animated film is the one i have an entire collection dedicated to, had one of the characters as my profile picture, and stated in my first ever article that two of my favorite Disney characters are in this movie. hunchback of Notre Dame has just about all of my Disney favorites: villain, Judge Claude Frollo, heroine, Esmeralda, villain song, "Hellfire", song in general, again, "hellfire", soundtrack, composed by Alan Menken and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and animation, which is done by hundreds of Disney animators who put their blood, sweat, and tears into this. even though it has some tonal issues, this film is really dark. I'm not even into that kind of stuff! and i think that's the reason why Disney doesn't shine that much light on it. but in all seriousness, please go watch this underrated gem. appreciate the antagonist unlike any other in a Disney film. appreciate the gorgeous colors and camera angles. appreciate the booming Latin choir. you'll probably thank me later,

favorite quotes:

life's not a spectator sport. if watching is all you're gonna do, then you're gonna watch your life go by without ya.
- Laverne
you were saying...lieutenant?
- Phoebus
gather around, everybody! there's good "noose" tonight!
- clopin
nice work, victor.
- Laverne
what do they have against people who are different, anyway?
- Esmeralda
choose me or the fire.
- Frollo
and he shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit!
- Frollo
you mistreat this poor boy the same way you mistreat my people. you speak of justice, yet you are cruel to those most in need of your help! [...] justice!
- Esmeralda

favorite song lyrics:

God help the outcasts, or nobody will
- Esmeralda, god help the outcasts
...treasure every instant
- Quasimodo, out there
who is the monster and who is the man?
- clopin, the bells of Notre Dame
this burning desire
is turning me to sin
- Frollo, hellfire
be mine or you will burn
- Frollo, hellfire
scurvy knaves are extra scurvy
on the sixth of "January"
all because it's topsy turvy day
- clopin, topsy-turvy

and those are my top 10 favorite animated movies, along with a few honorable mentions. i'm really passionate about this medium, even though i believe I'm at an age where i probably shouldn't. a lot of people consider it "kids' stuff". but that's not gonna stop me. the art of animation deserves more credit and I'm gonna witness the first ever animation feature win best picture at the Oscars. i just love the medium way too much. i swear I'm normal lol.

go check out my other articles if you wanna!!

I would also love a follow!
