writing tips is a four part mini-series
here's the links for previous episodes:

Words are beautiful. They have a sweet sound.
Forming them is pretty: your tongue touches your palate, it moves gracefully up to your lips, hitting your white teeth, and then the delightful sound of your words exits your mouth.
When you write, it's just as lovely. On a computer, you type in the letters and they pop up on the luminous screen, you see what you've written in a crisp and clean font. When you use a pen, if you listen carefully, you can hear the sound of the ink-dipped pen nib that touches the paper, leaving a trail that spells out your thoughts.

hey. I need to tell you something: you are important

Based on my experiences, I find that descriptions are the hardest part of a story. You have to be detailed, yet you do not want to bore the reader by writing pages and pages of descriptions.
Obviously, everyone's writing style is different. Some authors, such as Geoarge R. R. Martin and J. R. R. Tolkien, describe a lot of things in the best way possible. Others, Adam Silvera and Veronica Roth, write less.
Usually, when you have to write a high fantasy novel, you describe a lot of things because you want the reader to get inside the world you created. Some people enjoy it, myself included, and others prefer shorter books with more action.

There's no right or wrong way to write, so you have to decide how you want to write.

In this article, I'll help you find what you prefer. I'll also talk about some ways to improve your descriptions.

Try, try, try and try again.

To get better at anything, you just have to keep doing it.
Try to describe some random pictures that you find on the internet!

⇈here are some pictures that you can describe⇈

Try to think beyond appearance.

  • Who lives in the first picture?
  • Who are the two people in the picture?
  • Why is that girl crying?
  • Who does that dress belong to?
  • Why the hell is that food flying in the air wtfwtfwtf
  • Who took the last picture?

2 ☾

Just describe it.

Take only a notebook and a pen with you. Get out of your house and go to a park. Sit somewhere. Describe everything you see, try to paint with words.

Ask yourself

  • Where do these people come from?
  • Is someone waiting for them?
  • Where are they going?
  • What are they wearing?
  • How are they acting?
  • What are the plants near you?
  • What's the weather like?

Describe a colour.

It's hard, I know.
To describe it, you'll likely have to compare objects.
Sometimes, people forget that we don't only have adjectives to describe things.
