If you want to know how to make a mini-forest in your house, you need to keep reading.

PROJECT TIME: 30 Minutes.

  • Glass Vessel
  • Small Stones or Pebbles
  • Activated Charcoal
  • Moss
  • Potting Soil
  • Plants
  • Gloves
  • Decoration
  • Small Gardening Tools

1. We have to clean our vessel with soap and water. It's better if you clean it with antibacterial soap.

2. Cover the bottom of your terrarium with a 1 ½ inch-thick layer of small stones or pebbles. (2.5 cm). This will act as drainage for your terrarium.

3. Add a very thin layer of activated charcoal. This will keep water fresh and fight off any bacterial growth in your terrarium.

4. Place a layer of moss. Adding it will prevent the earth from seeping into the gravel. It will be better if you use gloves here.

5. Add a layer of potting soil. Depending on the size of the soil and the length of the roots of the plants, you must add between 5 cm (2 inches) to 7.5 cm (3 inches) of soil.

6. Now it’s time to add your plants. Dig small holes in the soil where you will place the plants. Remove the plant from its container and gently shake its roots to remove the excess soil and help the plant move its roots to the new soil.

7. After all of your plants are arranged in your glass vessel, you can add some decoration like pebbles, gnomes or trinkets.

8. Finally, Give your plants a little moisture. Water the terrarium lightly with a spray.

If your terrarium is open, water the plants occasionally. Plants within open terrariums need to be watered once every one or two weeks.

Succulent plants and cacti should be watered only once a month.

If you see bad weeds, fungi, or diseased plants, immediately remove the affected area. You should also be careful to eliminate withered parts of the plant, such as old flowers.

Do not place the terrarium in a dark corner; Choose a place with enough indirect light.

This depends on the type of terrarium you want to make.

If you want a tropical terrarium, it's better to use plants with tropical origin. I mean, plants that live in a warm climate and that adapt very well to an environment of high humidity. In this case the best are the epiphytic plants.

If you want a desert, terrarium, one that mimics a desert or semi-desert climate, in this case the best plants are the succulents.

There´s a list below of some plants you can use according to your terrarium:

➳ Orchids
➳ Bromeliads
➳ Lichens
➳ Ferns
➳ Mosses
➳ Dwarf Ficus
