As a person who's had almost as many bad days as good, I'm constantly trying to find ways to take care and maintain a good mental state. I know that mental health is a huge topic of discussion (thankfully!) and so it's a lot easier for most of us to talk about our personal issues. But for some, mental health is still a silent battle. So here is the very tip of the iceberg of taking care of your mental health.

Realise and accept that you are doing the best that you can

You can't spend every waking moment of every day beating yourself up for mistakes and failures in your past. You can't keep beating yourself up for your shortcomings. Remember that if you aren't happy where you are, tomorrow you can wake up again and try harder.

Indulge in what you love unapologetically

At the end of the day, you are only accountable to yourself. The decisions that you make are the ones you are going to live with, no one else. So if you aren't doing what makes you happy, then why are you doing it? To please someone else? What happens when they leave? So choose your career for yourself and choose one that isn't going to make you want to die each morning you wake up. Love who you love whether it's a boy or a girl. Eat whatever you want. Be friends with whoever you want.

Take care of yourself

If your body is healthy, your mind is happy. Keep your body clean. Eat well but treat yourself too. Drink healthy liquids. Take long baths or showers or go to the spa. Get a massage. Get a manicure. Take care of your hair and skin.

Remove toxic people from your life

Let go of people who don't want you. Let go of people who only criticise you. Let go of people who make it seem like you're difficult to be around and difficult to love. Let go of people who gossip and only have mean things to say about other people. The energy that you surround yourself with is the energy that you will absorb.

Rid yourself from worrying about things out of your control

The 5x5 rule: if it won't matter in 5 years, don't spend more than 5 minutes on it. What is done is done. If there is nothing you can do to change the outcome of something, then worrying about it is self-harm.

Practise self love and gratitude

Resist the temptation to hate yourself. You are alive and well and have made it this far. You are a survivor. That is enough reason to love yourself. Be grateful for everything you have; from the big things to the little things, privileges, opportunities and blessings. Use a journal or your phone and take time to write down daily a few things that you like about yourself as well as things that you're grateful for.

Do things that make you happy

Spend time with people that make you happy, travel, get a tattoo, go to festivals and parties, adopt a puppy or kitten, write poetry, watch too many movies, visit florists and book stores, paint pictures, go on a roadtrip. Heal your mind by doing things that make you happy

Don't bottle up your feelings

Tell people how you feel now. Talk about your feelings and what's bothering you. Take those burdens off your chest. Don't live with the regrets of things you wish you had said.

Practise spiritual activities

Disconnect and clear your mind by doing some yoga or meditation or reading a religious book.

See a therapist

If you feel like you can't do it anymore, that's what therapists and psychologists are there for. Respect your mind and reach out, get help. There is no shame in seeing a therapist every week. I actually believe every one should see a therapist now and then. Getting help is promoting healing and recovery.

Again, mental health is such a broad topic and what is mentioned here is just a few simple ways you can begin to take care of your mental health. There is so much more you can do and there are hundreds of resources out there if you need more help.
