quick reminder: you are loved

Hello everybody!
In today's article, I'm going to explain how you can create a believable character that the reader can sympathize with it.

1 ☾

The first thing that you want to do when you create a character is getting to know them.

I am not saying that you have to pinpoint perfectly their behaviour, but it i always nice to roughly know how they behave.
To do that, you'll have to know a few things:

  • what's your character's age?
  • what's their gender?
  • where are they from? Are they from the place the story is set?
  • are they the main character? Or are they a sidekick? A love interest? The antagonist? All of the above?

After you have these basic things laid down, it's good to get to know them even better!

2 ☾

Ask yourself "stupid" questions.

This step will help you create a more believable character. If you really know them, it will be easier to write about them.

  • what's their favourite colour?
  • what's their favourite ice cream flavour?
  • what's their favourite food?
  • what's their favourite book? Tv show? Movie? Do they even like reading or watching tv?

Probably, you will not need to write about these things in your story but it will help you thik about them as a real person!

3 ☾

Describe their looks.

Descriptions are important. You need to know what your character's body looks like to describe it and to make sure you are coherent when their looks come into play.

  • what's their hair colour? What's their hair length?
  • what's their skin tone?
  • do they wear make up?
  • how tall are they?
  • what's their eye colour? What's their eye shape?
  • what's their body type?

After you know these informations, you can think about what they would wear in different occasion. I used to use a website that is now closed but now I use we heart it!

If you look up "niche memes png" you will find tonnes of pictures of clothes that you can take inspiration from!

Make a mood board.

Mood boards are so so helpful to someone who values visuals. if you on this website, chances are that you are a visual person just like me!

You can make digital mood boards by collecting pictures:

or, if you like editing, you could do mood boards like these:

wow man, u so soft

what a spooky boi

or, if you enjoy collaging things and doing DIYs, you can print out pictures and glue them to a page! I prefer this option because I am limited with the amount of pictures that I can put on a page, which makes me spend less time on the internet.

i made these!!

This last option also helps me think. I find that cutting paper is relaxing and, while I do it, I can think about the story.

5 ☾

Write random short stories with your character as the main one.

Write a story in which they go to a coffee shop. Write a story in which they walk around and think about the meaning of life. Write a story in which they are younger. Write in different styles, once from their point of view and once from the point of view of another character and once in which you are the narrator.

Just experiment with your character! Put them in different situations and think about how they'd react!

bonus tip! ☾

Own a notebook where you write everything.

Having a physical copy of your work helps. I always print what I write and glue it on a notebook.

I also write about the characters in the notebook, so that it's easier to look up something about them when I need to remember it!
