The house was dark and filled with people dancing to loud hip-hop music and holding red solo cups. I looked around and saw plenty of familiar faces but didn't see Chris anywhere. I let out a deep breath that I didn't know I had been holding.
I followed Arriana's bleach blonde hair through the crowd of people near the front door. This house was huge. I couldn't remember the name of the guy who lived here, I think it was Justin something. A sweeping stair case led to the upper floors and people were leaning over the balcony throwing beer cans at each other. I stepped over a spilled drink and narrowly avoided a drunk kid lumbering to the bathroom looking like he was about to puke.
“I need a drink,” Arianna said over the music and I followed her into a kitchen with granite counter tops covered in beer cans and liquor bottles. The kitchen was just as packed as the foyer we had just left and Arianna thrust a drink in my hand, I sniffed it and gagged a little.
“Just drink it,” Maddy said coming up behind me. She looked over at a group of guys that I didn’t recognize in the far corner of the room. “Who do you think they are?” she said running her fingers through her super straight black hair and eyeing them interestedly.
“I dunno but why are they staring at us?” I said taking a sip of my drink and resisting the temptation to spit it out on the floor.
Maddie rolled her eyes, “They’re staring at you honey, don't be so naive.”
“Whatever,” I said and put my drink down, “lets go outside.”
“Nah, you go ahead I think I’m gonna try and talk to that cute blonde right there,” she said batting her lashes and flouncing across the room towards a cute guy wearing a black baseball hat.
I sighed and surveyed the dark room looking for someone I actually wanted to talk to. I could feel peoples eyes on me but I didn’t particularly care.
Thats when I saw him.
He was coming in through the glass sliding doors that led to the pool area, running his hands through his dark brown hair making sure it looked perfectly tousled. He was tall and dark wearing jeans and a black fitted tee with the flash of a silver chain across his neck. I hated him for looking so good.

He crossed the room and almost every girl turned to look at him. Except me. I looked away for an escape before he noticed me. I quickly backed out of the kitchen and ran right into someone.
“Oh shit, look who it is.” I looked up and recognized Travis, a tall basketball player who I hadn't talked to since graduation. He gave me a goofy smile and I could tell he was definitely not sober. I tucked a curl behind my ear and forced myself to smile,
“Hey Trav, whats up?” I yelled. He said something that I couldn't hear over the music and smiled again looking me up and down. I resisted the temptation to roll my eyes because I knew exactly where this was going. I had seen too many guys give me that look before.
“What?” I said loudly and he leaned in closer to me. He smelled like beer and smoke.
“I said you look really hot tonight”, he yelled in my ear. He put his hand on my waist, trying to pull me closer.
I was not in the mood.
“Thanks” i said flatly and I looked past his shoulder trying to spot Chris again, but I didn’t see him anywhere. I took Travis’s arm off me and said, “I need to go find my friends. I’ll see you later okay?” Before he could respond I had scooted behind him and disappeared into the crowd dancing to Drake in the living room.
I made my way through the bodies with difficulty. I had my foot stepped on and someone put their hands on my hips. I shook them off without even bothering to see who it was because I didn't care. I pushed through more aggressively now and finally made it to a less crowded corner near a couple whose faces looked like they were glued together. My phone vibrated in my pocket and I saw that Ari had texted me, 'Where r u? come out to pool area.'
I shoved my phone back in my pocket. To get to the pool area I had to go through the kitchen which was the last place I had seen Chris and my stomach did a little flip. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a guy who looked like he was about to come over and talk to me so I made my decision. I walked as fast I could, weaving my way through the people with my head down so I didn't make eye contact with anyone.
The pool area was brighter than the house due to the bluish green light coming from the huge rectangular pool where people were splashing around. I briefly wondered how safe it was to have highly intoxicated people swimming when I heard my name being called. I turned around to see my friend Tyler standing with a group of his friends near a beer pong table. I smiled and waved, making my way towards them. I wasn't sure how this conversation was going to go because I had always known that Tyler had a huge crush on me.
“Hey!” I said, it was easier to talk out here where the music wasn't so loud.
“Whats up?,” he said putting his arm around me, “You need a drink?” he grabbed a beer out of a nearby cooler and handed it to me. His friends were all looking at me interestedly and the two blonde girls who were talking to them before I came over were staring at me with slightly narrowed eyes. Great.
Tyler was saying something to me about school but I wasn't listening. He was standing a little too close to me and his hand was moving lower down my back. His friends were staring at me like I was some sort of meal.
“So what are you doing after thi-“ Tyler was saying, but I cut him off.
“Hey, I see Steph and Ari over there, I need to go tell them something, I’ll be right back” and I shrugged his arm off me, sidestepped another guy and jogged over to where my friends were sitting on a couch near a fountain. I had no intention of going back and I could feel all of their eyes on me as I walked away.
“Where the hell have you been” Steph said swaying slightly on her feet. I wondered how many drinks she had had already.
“I got stuck on the dance floor” I said, putting the beer Tyler had given me down on a table unopened.
“Why aren't you drinking yet, you look miserable” said Maddy. She was sitting next to the blonde boy in the baseball hat.
Before I could answer, Steph looked past my shoulder and said in a low voice, “Ohhh shit here comes trouble.”
I whirled around and came face to face with Chris. He was a whole head taller than me and he had a stupid cocky smirk on his face as he looked down at me. He was standing way to close for comfort, “I never thought I’d see you here tonight, angel”, he said. He tilted his head and he looked like he was trying not to laugh.
My breath caught in my throat. “Don’t call me that,” I said through my teeth. He smirked again and his eyes slowly traveled down my body and back up again, stopping at my mouth. He wasn't even trying to be subtle and I wanted to slap him. I lifted my chin up at him defiantly. I was not going to let him know the affect he had on me. He laughed and took a sip of his beer, “I think you need a drink, Aub”
“Yeah, why does everyone keep telling me that,” I said, annoyed. I was trying really hard to look anywhere but his eyes because I didn’t want to get lost in them.
I could feel him studying my face and he said, “I’m sensing some animosity.” I could tell he was trying to suppress a grin. I could feel the anger rising up in me and it didn’t help that everyone around us had stopped talking to watch our conversation.
“You’re probably the last person I want to be talking to right now Chris, so why don't you just do yourself a favor and walk away.” I said tossing my hair over my shoulder. I finally met his gaze. His eyes were the exact shade of deep midnight blue I had remembered. I narrowed mine. “Ouch”, he said, holding a hand over his heart. Then before I could stop him he pushed a curl out of my face and behind my ear. I froze at his touch.
“I’ll see you later angel”, he said softly and he sauntered away before I could think of a clever response.
I stood there frozen for several seconds before Arianna came up to me, “That was probably the most sexual tension I’ve ever seen in a conversation in my life”, she said watching Chis who had gone to the other side of the pool. “I mean, did you see the way he was looking at you?”
“Okay yeah I get it” I snapped. “Gimme that” I snatched the solo cup out of her hand that was full of who knows what and chugged the entire thing.
