stars lingered in the early twilight,
tinges of rose, lavender and teal painted the sky
swift, soft lazy strokes
a half hearted goodbye to day

before the moon waxed off the color,
revealing the black of night
he dangled by the puppeteer’s string,
ready to put on a show

with a new found hope of recognition,
soon lost as the stars arrived
one by one
blinking, twinkling, winking

accepting the attention with ease
outshining the moon’s silver somber glow
that guided and blanketed the audience below
unaware of his needed purpose

he wanted to be the star of the show
but was only ever the spotlight
