These days, life is extremely fast-paced. As a result, we often neglect our own well-being. Practising self-care can help you manage stress and boost your confidence.

What is self-care?

Self-care is, basically, taking care of yourself.

Oxford defines self-care as “the practice of taking an active role in protecting one’s own well-being and happiness, in particular during periods of stress”.

Ideal self-care is the constant repetition of many tiny habits. In effect, you will be able to function optimally – emotionally, physically, and mentally.

So, care for yourself by implementing tiny self-care habits every day.

Meditation is not only for hippies and religious people. Take some time to be still and breathe. Breathe in, breathe out. Visualise a place that makes you feel happy, such as a your favourite holiday spot, a beach or a forest. You can even be more specific and meditate on a memory.

Get 15 minutes of sun

Besides making you feel happier, sunlight has the added benefit of providing you with Vitamin D.

Vitamin D strengthens your bones and improves the absorption of calcium from food.

Laugh or cry wholeheartedly

Don’t bottle up your feelings. If you feel like laughing, laugh. Even if you’re in public – who knows, your laughter might cheer up an onlooker. On the other hand, when you feel like crying, let it all out.
Tip: Cry (or laugh) with someone.

Do a mini-declutter

Whether it is your office (or at least your desk) or your closet, getting rid of things you don’t need anymore ought to make you feel a lot better. Why not give clothes or stationary that are still in good conditions to charity? Sharing is caring, right?

Start a journal

Writing about your day can be very therapeutic. Take ten or so minutes to write about your thoughts, significant (or insignificant) events, and ideas.

If writing isn’t really your thing, why not start a bullet journal? This new trend is a good way of keeping track of your life by making bullet lists: to-do lists, a mood tracker, a bucket list… The possibilities are endless.

Stroke a pet

Animal lovers will know how calming and heartwarming it feels to stroke your cat or dog. If you don’t have a pet, however, find one to stroke at the park or at your local animal shelter.

Eat green daily

Spinach and broccoli are some of the healthiest vegetables mother earth has to offer. Not only do they contain a lot of nutrients, but they also help fight cancer and other chronic diseases. Other green nutrient-rich veggies are Brussels sprouts, green peas, Swiss chard, artichokes, and, of course, kale.

Now you have a good excuse to venture out to a farmer’s market.

Go cloud-watching

Retail therapy

Go on, splurge a bit. Use some of your hard-earned money to buy yourself a (small) luxury.

Fix a small annoyance at home

You know, that chore you still have to do that’s been keeping you awake at night? Maybe it’s a button lost, a light that needs a bulb replaced, or a tap that’s leaking.

Make some time to do it, and you’re guaranteed to feel satisfied afterwards.
