Secretly, everyone wants to be perceived as smart. I'm the first to admit that I like it when someone comments on my intelligence. But did you know that there are a few psychological tricks that make you appear even smarter?

1. Use graphs

If thinks look more "scientific" then they are more easily used to pursue someone. In a study 67% of participants believed a certain piece of scientific information without a graph. However, when a graph was added, then 96% of participants believed the information. Think about that the next time you try to win an argument.

2. Speak expressively

Temporarily removed

People that modulate their speech and keep pauses to a minimum come across as more intelligent. In a recent study two group of people were asked to give a short presentation. Those that used different pitches, tones and volumes were considered brainier.

3. Use middle initials

Research has shown that in text when a middle name is used, the person in question appears more knowledgeable. This is due to the fact that middle names are reserved for more formal contexts. One study asked participants to choose a certain team partner and those with middle initials were more likely to be chosen. Funny, right?

4. Wear glasses

Did you know that there is a correlation between what a university professor wears and how the students learn? If a teacher wears more formal clothing, students were more likely to pay attention and less likely to misbehave then when the instructor wore casual clothes. Also, there is a huge stereotype that smart people wear glasses. And therefore people wearing glasses are percieved as smarter.

5. Smile

Temporarily removed

People that are rated as highly intelligent in more cases were smiling more often than others. Another good reason to smile every once in a while.

6. Use difficult terminology

When we use special terminology, we intentionally make our opponent's intellectual status lower. The opponent might feel severe discomfort due to his own incompetence. To break his confidence completely, try to quote famous people. Now you can direct the conversation in any direction you want. However, if you use the terminology wrong, you might end up looking less intelligent than you are.
