Hi ! My name's Camille, I'm 14 years old, and I'm from France. Today, I'm competing for the EF Challenge 2018, and this video is my answer to the question : What does sustainable development mean to you ?

So, first things first, what is sustainable development ? Based on its fine definition, it's a form of development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Basically, the main idea is that, we, the present generations, must act responsibly so that resources on Earth will last and be available for the generations to come.
Sustainable development is really about improving the quality of life, everywhere. It's about people having a decent job, access to nutritious food an an affordable, quality education. All of this, regardless of where people live. But it's also about companies and economies to grow, and creating new technologies, without harming the environment.

Now, sustainable development is such an important topic nowadays, and yet, thousands of people are still starving. Thousands of people still live with under 3 dollars a day. Thousands of people are killed because other people couldn't agree. Thousands of people are bullied because of who they are. Thousands of animals are killed, so that we can eat them ! And populations who have resources are over using those resources.
How did we ended up that bad ?

To me, sustainable development means progress, but most importantly, it means respect. Respect towards the generations who are not yet there but who will take over. Respect towards the planet that we are gonna bequeath to them. And respect towards every life on this planet, whether it's human or not.

The message I want to send is : be kind. Be kind to one another. Be kind to animals. Be kind to the planet. Can you imagine how the world would be if everyone was just… kind ?
It doesn't matter if your not doing big things, you're human, you have limits. And you know, change starts by making baby steps.
Just ask yourself before doing anything that might hurt someone, something, or the planet itself. Because, at the end of the day, you're the only one responsible for your actions, and their consequences.

To sum up, the world as it is today is our heritage from our ancestors, and it's our duty to keep on making it a better place to live in, for us, and for the next generations. We have to work all together and break down the barriers that keep people in need from living a good life in a good environment. The planet as a lot to offer to us, and we must repay it by taking care of it, and protect it. Sustainable development is about progress, and respect towards everyone and everything that live and will live on Earth.

My name's Camille, and I'm telling you that you have the power to support sustainable development. Use it now.
