One of the most affective things when it comes to fertility is the age. Especially for women. Women’s fertility is at its best when woman is around 20-30 years old. After 25 years it starts to decline slowly. When woman passes 35 years, becoming pregnant will get much harder. The best fertility age for men is around 25-30 years. After that it starts to decline as well as women’s fertility, but not as drastically. So as a conclusion, yes, it is possible that you might not get pregnant even if you still had your period for example at the age of 40. However, fertility doesn’t decline as fast if you have already had a baby.

What factors might lower your fertility?

Being under- or overweight is a factor that causes infertility for women. Too low fat percentage affects the uterine mucosa. Weight also affects your menstrual cycle. Irregular cycle makes becoming pregnant harder. For men, overweight might also weaken their fertility. However, too low or high BMI usually affects fertility only temporary. Once you balance your BMI back to healthy limits (18.5 - 24.99) the probability of getting pregnant grows.

Smoking lowers the quality of eggs and sperm, and therefore fertilization. Smoking also reduces the blood flow to the uterus of the mucous membrane which makes implantation of the embryo harder.

There are no safe limits when it comes to alcohol. That’s why it is recommended to reduce or even quit drinking alcohol. Avoiding alcohol use promotes good sperm production for men.

STD’s (sexually transmitted diseases) can also affect your fertility so it is important to use protection during intercourse.

What about pregnancy contraceptives?

Hormones used in birth control pills don’t affect your fertility permanently. Actually, they can help preserve fertility by preventing the growth of endometriosis. In addition, the thyroid hormone increases the persistence of the cervix of the mucus, which complicates for example the progression of infections in the uterus and the fallopian tubes.
