One of the worst things about being lonely or feeling like you have no true friends is the overwhelming boredom of having nothing to do every weekend. But in this article, I want to suggest some things you can do to make the most out of having lots of free time. They won’t only kill your boredom – they’ll give you the opportunity to make new friends and make you a more interesting, well-rounded person!

1. Try baking or cooking

Bake cute cupcakes! If you get good at it, bring them into share with your class at school – you can’t help but love people who give you free food! Or look up recipes online and try cooking your favourite dish! It’s really therapeutic and your family will appreciate you cooking a meal for them.

2. Try a dance class

There are so many different types of dance to try that you’ll definitely find one you like! If you like wearing beautiful dresses, try ballet. If you’re good at gymnastics or like excitement, try cheerleading. If you want the chance to dance with a partner and feel like a princess, try ballroom.

3. Try horse riding

If you’re lonely because you’re shy or socially anxious, spending time with animals is a great way to boost confidence. Horse riding is a great way to do this! Some riding schools will even let you volunteer there – you get to brush the horses’ manes and muck out their stables, which is a great opportunity to bond with an animal and learn responsibility.

4. Learn a language

Pick your favourite culture and learn their language! French is an easy language to learn so it’s great if you’ve never tried learning a language before. Looking at websites online will help you do this. Immerse yourself in the culture – for example, if you’re learning French, treat yourself to some macaroons!

5. Volunteer

Find something that you feel passionate about and see if there are any opportunities for you to help. For instance, if you care about homeless people you could volunteer at a soup kitchen. You’ll be beating your loneliness and helping other people at the same time.

6. Get a new look

If your loneliness is caused by low self-esteem, getting a new look can really boost your confidence. Watch online tutorials to see how you can be more adventurous with your hair and make-up, treat yourself to some pretty clothes, or paint your nails in your favourite colour for a little pick-me-up.

7. Improve your fitness

It’s no secret that exercise makes you feel happy and positive! In fact, one of my favourite things to do is cycle around the beautiful old streets of Cambridge! Spend some time stretching every day to get really flexible, go out for a run if the weather’s nice, or join a gym if you can afford it.

8. Focus on your studies

Using your extra time to focus on your studies is a great way to boost your grades and even get in to a top university.
