Hello everyone and welcome to another instalment of my complete guide series. I’ll be talking about what test anxiety is and how to manage it.

If you’re anything like me then exams and tests give you major anxiety. It’s normal to get a little worried before taking an exam or test but once it starts to affect your performance you have to speak to your teachers and find a way to cope or deal with it. Everyone has their reasons as to why they get scared or anxious before taking an exam or test. It could be the fear of failing and disappointing yourself or your family, it could be due to lack of preparation beforehand, impressing your friends and so on.

It isn’t a pleasant experience and only makes focusing during said exam/test much harder because you’re mind tends to be all over the place or nowhere at all. You question yourself even for the easiest questions. Some people feel their heart race, get nauseous or even suffer from a panic attack.

So does this mean it’s always going to be like this?

No, it’ll be fine I promise you it’ll be okay but you have to learn some tips on how to deal with it and I'll share some based on what I've learnt and from research.

Prepare ahead of time

It's so easy to procrastinate and tell ourselves we'll get to it once we feel more motivated but we end up pushing it to the deadline and end up panicking and trying to cram months of work into a night/few hours. That isn't okay, i'm guilty of doing this but it only contributes to the stress you feel during the exam. So when you know you have a test or exam coming up study and get revising ASAP! It feels so rewarding coming out with top marks.

Stay positive

This may sound cliche but it really isn't. Your head will be filled and clouded by so much negativity so you have to try your best to look at all the positive outcomes and believe in yourself and your abilities. Positive affirmations each day can go a long way. You're smart, talented and totally capable of passing that test and exam okay! I'm rooting for you.

Focus on yourself and your paper

If you're constantly bringing yourself down by comparing yourself to your classmates, it won't help you in the actual exam! Focus on yourself and stay calm. Don't think about the others and do your best.

Relax

There are apps/websites you can use to help stay calm and tone down your nerves. Use them to help make sure your nerves aren't getting the best of you before the paper. If you don't want to use those, find methods that personally help you stay calm. The key is to staying as level-headed as you can before, during and after the exams.

Get help from teachers/counsellors

If your school has any counsellor in place meet them and talk to them about your problems. You don't always have to deal with it on your own. Sometimes it's best to have an extra helping hand to make things easier for you.

Don't give up!

I know it feels like you won't get anything right and but trust me you can and you will. I want to keep repeating how capable you are so you know and never forget. I want you say this right now (or later if you're in public): "I am smart, confident, talented. I will pass any test/exam I take. I will do my very best and not to prove anything to anyone else but because I know I can."

And remember to do your very best. At the end of the day if you know you put in as much effort as you could then be happy because you did your best. There's nothing wrong with striving to be the best but be YOUR best and not the best in the eye's of others.
