bts, army, and jin image

Hello ARMYs! Welcome to another one of my articles!

As many of you probably know, BTS's latest comeback (not counting Hope World or their Japanese album) was by the name of Love Yourself: Her. It featured now RIAA gold-certified hits, DNA and MIC Drop. But what does "Love Yourself" have to do with any of the songs in the album?

Intro: Serendipity

the universe has moved for us
without missing a single thing
our happiness was meant to be
cause you love me and I love you
-intro: serendipity

We start off with... Intro: Serendipity! Honestly, at first, this seems like a full on love song, introducing the theme of the universe tying in with love. But, as BTS so famously has said, you need to love yourself before you love someone else.
Also, "Our happiness was meant to be" ties in with loving yourself because being happy=being completely satisfied with yourself, therefore, you love yourself.

DNA

don’t worry, love
none of this is a coincidence
we’re totally different, baby
because we’re the two who found our destiny
-dna

After Intro: Serendipity introduces us to the idea of destiny, DNA more clearly shows it. "Don't worry, love/None of this is a coincidence" could be telling you not to worry about yourself, because you are not a coincidence (that sounds weird but whatever). DNA also talks about being different, "because we're the two who found our destiny" and being different is a popular topic when it comes to loving yourself. AKA: love yourself even if you're different! Even if everyone thinks you're weird for liking 7 Korean men who wear Gucci...

Best of Me

but all unhappiness stopped
you brought heaven to me
don’t speak so easily
because without you, there’s no me
-best of me

I think that in the verse above, it's very easy to see the theme of "love yourself." While it may seem like a romantic thing, it's really not, looking deeper. What BTS is saying: "YOU MATTER!" "Don't speak so easily" could be BTS telling you not to speak so easily about yourself not mattering, "because without you, there's no me," which seems like the sappiest thing ever, but it adds onto loving yourself.
"I need those words/That you'll never change, one more time" adds on, too, because you should love yourself even if you're different, and never change for anyone besides you.

보조갠 / Illegal

that dimple is illegal
no, it’s dangerous, oh yes
so I call you ille-girl
your existence alone is a crime
-보조갠 / Illegal

So this song's very punny (just my type), and is about (you guessed it!) dimples. It also seems a bit...off, in the terms of loving yourself. Why? "Your existence alone is a crime," "You're too dangerous to live in this world," "That smile is so cruel." Moving on, this is BTS telling you that you're B E A U T I F U L . Even if you don't have dimples (sob, me) you're B E A U T I F U L . So love yourself! Love yourself and your dimples (or non existent ones) cuz you're illllleeeeegiiiirrrlll....

Pied Piper

i know, you can’t help what you like
but stop, interpret the music video later
you have so many pictures of me in your room anyway
it’s not just one hour, it’s a whole year that’ll disappear
-pied piper

BTS knows us too well TT. But no, this song IS NOT dissing ARMY! BTS is just telling us that it isn't healthy obsessing over them, and that we, while enjoying BTS's music, should focus on our studying and life, too (3/100 on a test, eh, Jungkook?)
The force message of loving yourself with this one is strong. In this song, BTS tells us to study/get on with our lives, instead of "interpret(ing) the music video." Because, you should keep your life going, and be happy with yourself (binge watching Bangtan Bombs doesn't count) to Love Yourself. Just another step on the stairs to loving yourself~

Skit: Billboard Music Awards Speech

it's really honored and
most importantly this award belongs to the every people all around the world
that shine the love and light on us by the millions and make bts proud really everywhere
please, army, remember what we say, love myself, love yourself

yes, rm did just say "the every people"
This is very clear with the message of "love yourself." I mean, RM says, "love myself, love yourself."
But this also shows you that BTS has really grown, from sharing one room to wEARING GUCCI EVERYDAY (cough, Taehyung, cough). It shows you that you can get through hardships and become successful and on the top, if you put your mind to it. So love yourself; you reach your goal one day, don't worry.

MIC Drop

haters gon’ hate
players gon’ play
live a life, man
good luck
-mic drop

This song tells you to dISS THE HATERS. Anyway, this song tells you to live your life and ignore the haters, occasionally roasting them cuz you have a bag full of trophies. AKA, love yourself despite the haters. Especially with the quote, "Even if I die now, I'm damn happy," because you should be happy and, as I said earlier, happy=being completely satisfied with yourself, therefore, you love yourself.

고민보다 Go / Go Go

we’re too young to just worry
for today, just go instead of worrying
if you get scared and say you’re saving, it becomes poop
so rub it all around
-고민보다 Go / Go Go

the life of a broke army

고민보다 Go / Go Go tells you not to worry, just be happy, cause YOLO. As you already know, happy=loving yourself. So spend! You're "too young to just worry"! Be "Cruisin' like NEMO"! Love Myself! Love Yourself!

Outro: Her

with your existence, i find new meaning and the night shines
now i know, even after the darkness
to me, you are the morning
you woke me up
-outro: her

This song makes me so emotional~
Anyway, the verse above was the clearest to me when thinking about the message "love yourself". AKA, happy=self love. Because finding something/-one that makes you happy can lead to loving yourself.

Skit: 망설임과 두려움 (Hesitation and Fear)

that time, that was then, and now is now. i think it’s like our collective idea of an idol. about how we want to live, what we show. we keep throwing out social issue messages, like even now, our album title is “love yourself” too. we don’t make meaningless songs but doing this seems like we’re acting too, as we’re living our life.
-skit: 망설임과 두려움 (hesitation and fear)

yOU THOUGHT IT WAS OVER

So this is a hidden track (which means it's only in the physical album and can't be bought digitally) which is over 8 minutes long, and is all BTS talking, and in the beginning, Bang PD-nim. It starts off pretty light, then goes deeper and deeper until you're all in the feels. It's not really a direct "love yourself" message, if you ask me. I think it shows a lot about BTS's past, and how successful they are, but at the same time, BTS also talks about their fears in the skit. It's more of the realness of BTS, which shows that you can love yourself and still be * human * at the same time, which means that you don't need to be a superstar or anything to love yourself.

바다 (Sea)

Where there is hope, there is always despair (x2)
We need to be in despair, for all our hardships (x2)
-바다 (sea)

Sea talks about defeating hardships, which are compared to deserts. It talks about seemingly endless struggles, but brings in hope. Self love is like that hope, the one that keeps you going, trying to defeat your trials.

Bonus: BTS x #BTSLoveMyself

people need to speak of love and lingering hope...even in this world wracked with hatred and violence.
-official love myself website

Love Myself is a campaign started by BTS, following BTS's participance in UNICEF's #ENDviolence campaign, to help support young people. According to Bang Si-Hyuk, the CEO of BigHit Entertainment, "...we hope to share a strong vision that goes beyond music into protected children and teens from various types of violence in society..." The funds earned from the Love Myself campaign "will be used to protect and support child and teen victims of domestic and school violence as well as sexual assault around the world. Also, this will be used to provide an education to local communities for violence prevention," says the Love Myself website. The funds come from donations worth 500 million won (approximately $447,000 USD) from BigHit and BTS, 3% of the income from the sales of the physical Love Yourself album series, 100% of the income of the sales from official Love Myself merchandise, and donations from the donation desks from UNICEF.

In conclusion, self love has everything to do with Love Yourself: Her. Apparently, BTS is planning to make Love Yourself: Her the first part in a series, so perhaps in coming albums the topic of loving yourself will appear. Also, if you haven't listened to some of these songs yet, please listen to them! Especially Sea, it's so emotional...

Anyway...

love yourself. love myself. peace.
