Being a young adult is hard, and we often lose ourselves in the way. This is my advice for when you're feeling this way.

Spend some time alone
It's normal for us to be dealing with people all day, every day: at work, at school, and even at home. Sometimes this can be exhausting, especially because we are expected to be pleasing and courteous at all times. This can be draining and can cause us a lot of stress, making us irritable and angry.
A great idea would be to schedule some time to be alone every single day. Even if you don't live alone and have kids, this is essential for your well being as well as your family's. This way you can relax, but also take this time to analyze your emotions, your feelings, your thoughts; what has made you happy today? What events did you hate? Have you accomplished anything that you wanted to do today? Do you feel angry? Sad? Why? These are some questions that when answered, might give you a better idea of what you're dealing with in terms of emotions, because emotions define us and if you want to find yourself, you have to understand and respect them.

Try out different hobbies
Is often hard for us to find something that we really like doing and stick with it, mostly because we think we are not good enough (even when we are) or just because we feel like we should be doing something else with our time.
Hobbies are essential and they give you an idea of who you are, the things you like and enjoy, plus they keep your mind uncluttered - they are a form of meditation. Some hobbies to try out could be:

  • Photography
  • Painting / Drawing
  • Starting a collection (makeup, rocks, stamps, bottle caps, books, anything)
  • Reading
  • Learning a new language
  • Swimming

Have a planner / bullet journal
Start planning out your day, week or month. This will give you a sense of accomplishment before even doing anything. A way to spice things up is to use colored pencils, markers and stickers. This will keep you motivated even on those days where you don't want to do anything. Also, this is a way to visualize what are your goals, which will give you an insight into who you are and what is important to you.

Declutter your life
I'm not just talking about your closet or your home; I'm talking about people, emotions, mindsets, anything that's been bothering you and making you feel small and tense and out of control. Take some time to eliminate people from social media, write out your thoughts on a sheet of paper in order to declutter your mind, set out new intentions for your life and forgive yourself, let go of old mistakes.

Meet new people
One of the best ways to find yourself again is through new people. Not only will you open yourself to a world of possibility, but you will also give yourself the chance to go on new adventures and gather new experiences.
When we surround ourselves with the same people all the time, we tend to absorb some of their characteristics, which can be mistaken for our own. It's not about forgetting about your current friends, but about expanding your circle while giving your true self a chance.
