HOW TO EAT LIKE A CALIFORNIAN

Hey guys! This is part 3 of 4 of my California series. I know this has taken a long time, but my schedule this quarter has been WILD!! Anyways, I’m super excited for this article because I love food lol! Let’s jump in.

California is famous for its food. A lot of California food is very healthy. It also cannot be healthy hahah. But generally, Californians are probably more concerned than the general U.S. population about what they’re putting in their body. In no particular order, here is a list of popular foods in California.

NOTES:
1. Californians basically want avocado in everything: burritos, tacos, toast, guac, poke, sushi, grilled cheese, burgers...
2. Milk tea/boba is HUGE. Make sure you are in a part of California that is urban because it will have a better chance of having a present asian population, and therefore the boba will actually taste good. Bay Area and Los Angeles. The boba in Santa Barbara is gross lol.
3. Almond milk is a healthy substitute and people who aren't vegan drink it, and you can see it in popular restaurants. Also popular: coconut milk and cashew milk.
4. When I go out of state, it sometimes surprises me to not see tofu as an option when choosing your "meat" for dishes. It's pretty much everywhere in California lol
5. Burritos and tacos are AMAZING in California. No other state in the USA comes close. Make sure to try breakfast burritos, fish tacos, and California burritos (they have French fries in them). SoCal prob has the best Mexican food. Californians will buy Mexican food from street vendors cause they know it's better than restaurant food.
6. ACAI IS SO POPULAR. Pitaya is also pretty popular and pretty!
7. Matcha is used in so many things. If you've never tried it, know it is an acquired taste for many people so use caution hahah.
8. Quinoa (pronounced keen-wha) is a grain that's super popular in South America. And now in California.
9. Mochi is a Japanese dessert. It has a sweet dough that can surround fruit, ice cream, or other fillings. You can get this at Whole Foods!
10. Sushi and sushiritos are amazing. Again, like with boba, try and get it somewhere that has a large asian population.
11. Ramen and pho (pronounced fuh) are sooo good. Again, get it somewhere with large asian pop.
12. Sweet potato fries are a healthier substitute for normal fries. They can be baked and yeah they're so freakin good lol.
13. Probably couldn't make this list without including In-N-Out. Try anything with animal style and look up the secret menu! Make sure you know what you're getting before you go in the restaurant. Californians already know what they're ordering b/c there's only like 5 things on the menu, and they've ordered the same thing 100 times. You'll be spotted as a tourist if it looks like you don't "know what you're doing". Also, beware: know that there will be lots of teenagers at In-N-Out.
14. Go to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego for ice cream. Santa Cruz has good stuff too.
15. A cruffin is a croissant and muffin hybrid. I personally haven't tried this, but it was created in California, and I always see them on Instagram lol.
16. Order poke in a place with large asian pop.
17. Sourdough bread was created in San Francisco, and in my opinion, is the best type of bread that exists. Get a clam chowder in a bread bowl in San Francisco if you want to be heaven.

Disclaimer: Not all Californians eat these, and these foods exist other places too, of course. TBH, a lot of these foods just aren't as good/popular in other USA states than they are in California though hahaha. Hope you enjoyed this!
