Many of us can't live without it: coffee. The caffeine in the hot drink helps us to wake up and stay alert. However, coffee is not very healthy. Therefore an important question is: is it possible to wake up without coffee? The answer is yes you can. With these tips, you'll be so much more alert, without needing caffeine.

Drink enough water

I might sound like a mother right now, but science shows that keeping yourself hydrated is extremely important if you want to feel awake. This is due to the fact that you dehydrate while sleeping by for example sweating. A lack of water increases fatigue, decreases concentration and decreases alertness. So drink a glass of water first thing in the morning and don't forget to stay hydrated during the day.

Cold shower

Research has shown that ending your shower with cold water can activate parts of the brain that are responsible for you feeling awake. Also, your metabolic rate (how many calories you burn per unit of time) increases after a cold shower. This reduces tiredness.

Light is key

When it is dark, your body produced the hormone melatonin, that makes you sleepy. Light reduces the production of melatonin. So if you want to feel less sleepy: go outside or use a iluminating alarm clock to wake you up.

Drink orange juice

Oranges and other citrus fruits contain many molecules that are called flavanoids that increase alertness.

Be physically active in the morning

I must admit: I don't always follow this rule, but I try to cycle to university as a way of exersize every day. My reason for this: research has shown that students who were physically active in the morning, actually performed better on tests, than those who were not active. Physical activity enhances concentration due to increased blow flow and therefore increasing the amount of oxigen that goes to your brain. Also, the hippocampus, the part of the brain that is very important for learning and memory is more active during physical exersize.

Do not skip your breakfast

I sound like a mother again, but research has shown that a healthy breakfast increases alertness, especially if the meal consists of carbs and fibre. These components make sure that you feel full for a longer time and result in alertness that lasts longer than for example after a breakfast that is rich in sugar or fat.

Will you be trying out these tips to wake up in the morning without needing a cup of coffee? I certainly will!
