I just want to start by saying I consider myself a feminist, one who believes that women deserve equal rights and privileges to that of men. I do not believe that women should rule or dominate men as that is not what real feminist believe.

Why Women Are STILL Fighting

feminism, empowerment, and quotes image

For those who believe that the feminist movement is getting out of hand or needs to stop, whether you are a man or a women, you need to understand that even after one hundred years of women getting the vote, women are still not equal to men.

  • Women account for only 7% of board chairs and 6% of chief executives in the largest companies in the EU.
  • The UK is among the worst performing EU states on improvements to gender equality.
  • Income gaps have narrowed, but on average women still earn 20% less than men, and the average masks huge disparities across the EU.
  • In education, men still dominate the fields of science and technology (66%). Women represent about three-quarters of tertiary students in education (78%), health and welfare (71%), and humanities and the arts (65%).

This isn't even the half of it.

It's Even Worse For Black Women

quotes, woman, and feminism image

Living in a patriarchal society is even worse for a black woman, they don't only need to deal with people judging them because of their sex but also the colour of their skin, which is ridiculous and is just another reason why people will not stop fighting for equality!

Need examples? Here you go:

  • Despite the large gender disadvantage faced by all women, black women were near parity with white women in 1979. However in 2016, white women’s wages grew to 76 percent of white men’s, COMPARED to 67 percent for black women relative to white men. A racial difference of 9 percentage points. The trend is going the wrong way—progress is slowing for black women.

Myth: If black women worked harder, they’d get the pay they deserve.

The truth: Black women work more hours than white women. They have increased work hours 18.4 percent since 1979, yet the wage gap relative to white men has grown.

I do believe that most, if not all traditional religion is patriarchal, I don't believe that every aspect of religion is however. Woodhead believes there are ‘religious forms of feminism’ ways in which women use religion to gain freedom. For example the hijab or veil worn by many Muslim women. While Western feminists tend to see it as a symbol of oppression, to the wearer it may symbolise resistance to oppression. The hijab is a symbol of liberation that enables them to enter the public sphere without losing their culture and history.

Feminism Isn't Just For Women!

feminist, feminism, and men image

Feminism doesn't just empower women, it can empower men too as not all men have to live up to the patriarchal ideals that are pushed upon them; feminism can affect the harm that patriarchal norms cause for men.

  • In this patriarchal society men are told to 'man-up', 'stop being a pussy' and 'men don't cry', all these sayings and/or values are damaging to men and society as upholding these typical 'masculine' ideals just creates hate for no reason.
"A big part of feminism is understanding how one’s actions and beliefs affect others, which patriarchal masculinity systematically avoids by upholding a more individualistic and man-versus-world mentality."
- Philippe Leonard Fradet

Men are brought up with these sexist and stereotypical views on what a man should look like or act like and this is all because of the patriarchal society we live in, feminism promotes equality between both sexes, so if you wish to be a stay at home Dad that's okay, if you want to be a nurse that's okay, if you want to wear makeup, guess what? THAT'S OKAY!!! It does not make you any less of a man, just as women being a body builder, a fireman, a CEO doesn't make her any less of a woman.

I Just Want To Finish By Saying...

Personally I don't think the feminist movement is getting out of hand, I think it is important for women and men to fight for equality and if you are someone who is finding it so repetitious, don't blame feminists, blame the people who have the power to make a change but don't do anything about it!
