“You'd think that people would have had enough of silly love songs
I look around me and I see it isn't so”

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

That quote is from Wings, the song is called Silly Love Songs and it’s my perfect segue into this article. So yeah, I’m doing a love songs playlist, wooooo so original, I know. Anyways, I felt like contributing to this ago-old celebratory day, so I wanted to write an article. However, as I do not give two shits about love due to the situation I’m in my life right now, I can’t really give advice or anything like that because I’m so out of it. But as music is my go-to, here is a sappy playlist filled with love songs for you! These aren’t maybe the obvious love songs like you’d see on every playlist filled with love songs (couch Thinking Out Loud cough All Of You cough), so even if you won’t spend Valentine’s day with your significant other like me, I hope you still enjoy this list. I’ve added notes here and there + music videos you should definitely check out.

I’ve divided the song into categories, these are sappy love songs, pop, golden oldies, and indie. I highly suggest listening to every song, but if you don’t feel like doing that, you at least get to select your favorite genre(s).

I’ve made a Spotify playlist with all the songs mentioned + some covers, here it is: https://open.spotify.com/user/clarity-s/playlist/5tmfIf3K1i9ULzRZonenNi?si=t2zqhA0oTfiklwlKSw9ejw

So here we go!

Sappy love songs
These songs are just adorable songs with soft paced rhythms and cutesy lyrics that you want to be tattooed on your skin or write all over your walls (k maybe that's a bit too dramatic). You can either swoon to these with your significant other, or when you’re alone and feel like it as well, whichever you prefer. In other words, the Ed Sheeran category.

  • Jessie Ware - Say You Love Me
  • Coldplay - Yellow
  • Tom Odell - Grow old with me
  • Jason Mraz & Colbie Caillat - Lucky
"Lucky" is really cute if you’ve fallen in love with your best friend, awwww.
  • Ed Sheeran - Kiss me
  • The Lumineers - Ho Hey
  • Lost Under Heaven - The Great Longing
This song is very unknown, but it’s truly a gem, hidden among all the music titles. Give it a listen and feel it all, just like I did when I first laid my eyes (my ears?) upon it.
  • Jason Mraz - I Won’t Give Up
Obviously an amazing song, but this also happens to be where my username came from (when I look into your eyes, it’s like watching the night sky)
  • Lana Del Rey - Love
  • Ed Sheeran - One
Okay okay, I didn’t want too much Ed in here because we all know that about 75% of his discography can be put on this list, but this song… this song is so small yet so powerful and moving.
  • Shawn Mendes - Ruin (MTV Unplugged)
  • Jason Mraz - I’m Yours
  • Beyoncé - Halo
  • Lana Del Rey - Video Games
  • Soko - We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow
If you’ve binged The End Of The F****** World (like I did), you might recognize this beautifully intricate song. It also gained popularity when it got featured in a viral video on youtube where 20 strangers were asked to kiss for the first time. Anyways, another small, almost quiet song with a lot of soul.
  • Taylor Swift - You Are In Love
Yes, an actual love song by Taylor Swift. And it’s pretty damn good. I really wanted to put a video here so you could hear it for yourself, but there aren’t any videos on Youtube for it.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

In this genre you’ll find pop songs that are known to the masses, or songs with good beats and not per se deep, intricate lyrics. Nevertheless, these are stil 100% worth your time!

  • Dagny - Love you like that
This one by Dagny is such a cool song, it’s really uplifting and needs more recognition ASAP.
  • Snow Patrol - Just Say Yes
  • OneRepublic - What You Wanted
  • OneRepublic - Something I need
  • Charlie XCX - Boom Clap
  • Echosmith - Tell Her You Love Her
  • Kings Of Leon - Use Somebody
An obvious rock song, but as it is very popular, it fits here. Besides, the cover Shawn Mendes did is spectacular. The second part of the video is Treat You Better, but just give it a listen, especially if you enjoyed Ruin.
  • Snow Patrol - Chasing cars
  • Beyoncé - XO
“In the darkest night hour, I'll search through the crowd // Your face is all that I see, I’ve given you everything, baby, love me lights out.”
  • Ne-Yo - Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)
  • Betty Who - Somebody Loves You
  • Keane - Somewhere Only We Know

Golden oldies
Let’s go back here… to the times where everything was simpler.

  • Elvis Presley - Can’t Help Falling In Love
Easily one of the best love songs of all time. If you ever wanna sing something to your significant other, go for this song. It’s simple and gets the point across, but heartfelt.
If you’re not that into older music, this cover by Twenty One Pilots’ Tyler is also really really pretty.
  • Bryan Adams - Heaven
  • Michael Jackson - I Just Can’t Stop Loving You
  • Donna Lewis - I Love You Always Forever
  • Ben E. King - Stand By Me
Same story as Can’t Help Falling In Love, one of the greatest love songs from the last century. The swoon-song, if we’re being honest.
  • The Crystals - Then He Kissed Me
  • Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
  • The Beatles - I Wanna Hold Your Hand
  • Cheap Trick - I Want You To Want Me (live version)
  • Whitney Houston - How Will I Know
Sorry to burst the bubble, but Whitney's I Will Always Love You is not a fucking love song that you want to be played at your wedding. She literally sings “if I should stay, I would only be in your way, so I'll go” and “we both know I'm not what you, you need”. Gosh. (sorry, but I just can't stand it when people say that)
With that being said, may I present to you: the marvellous song How Will I Know.
  • The Dixie Cups - Chapel Of Love
  • The Righteous Brothers - Unchained Melody
  • The Beatles - She Loves You
  • Mr. Big - To Be With You
  • Roberta Flack - The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face
  • Olivia Newton-John & John Travolta - You’re The One That I Want
  • The Romantics - What I Like About You
  • The Proclaimers - I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)
At first glance, this song probably isn't what you'd expect when someone says "love songs". But if you cut back a little and be left with the melody and intricate lyrics, like in Sleeping At Last’s cover you can listen to below, it’s amazing.

♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡

I’m a huge fan of indie music. For those of you who don’t know, indie music is quite difficult to characterize, but from the way I see it, it’s music that goes beyond. So the lyrics are deeper, the instrumental parts are more intricate, the music just… hits you harder emotionally. That’s also why there are more videos in this part of the playlist.

  • The 1975 - Fallingforyou (live)
This song... this fucking song, I swear. This is the song to play on one of those boomboxes outside my window if you wanna win me over. That's it, that's how much I love this song. It's so intricate and small, yet is so meaningful and holds the power to combust your insides (no idea how to express my hardcore feelings about this song without making it dramatic lol)
I unfortunately wasn’t able to only get the performance of fallingforyou, but if you aren’t keen on watching the whole live show (which I highly recommend you to do anyway, it's great, trust me), the speech before The 1975 actually plays the song starts at 1:08:30. Please listen to it, it’s the absolute best. Especially the part where the whole stadium screams along with Matty “I don’t wanna be your friend, I wanna kiss your neck”… ah. And the part after the song is over is so cute!!
  • Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic - Home
  • Vancouver Sleep Clinic - Living Water
  • Bleachers - Alfie’s Song (Not So Typical Love Song)
Alfie's Song will be in the soundtrack of the movie Love, Simon, along with Wild Heart and two other songs by Bleachers!
  • Lorde - The Louvre
This song is about a crush. They’re about crushes sometimes.
  • Ezra Vine - Celeste
Celeste… is probably one of my greatest findings in music of 2017. It’s also about a crush, and the singer can’t get the person out of his head. It’s like… really heartwarming and gives adventure vibes. Out of all the songs in this article, THIS is the one you 100% should give a listen to.
ILYSB, or “I Love You So Bad”, is just… so cute. Nothing else to say here really. Just like Pink Skies.
  • LANY - Pink Skies
  • The 1975 - Heart out
The 1975 plays this song in the live concert at O2 as well, you’ll find it if you go to 08:00 in the video I mentioned at fallingforyou.
  • The Smiths - There’s A Light That Never Goes Out
  • Josh Auer - Something Worth Fighting For
  • Bleachers - Wake Me
When Bleachers was playing live, Jack Antonoff said that if people were on a date to their concert, this is the song you should kiss them on. That’s all you need to know.
  • Sleeping At Last - Turning Page
  • Bleachers - Wild Heart
  • The xx - VCR

That was it! Thank you so much for reading and listening! I truly hope you will all have an amazing Valentines day, regardless of whether you are in a relationship or not.

Lastly, I want to mention one song for those of you who won’t spend the 14th with their significant other. There unfortunately isn’t a good video for the song, but you can enjoy it on Spotify :)

  • Thudimentals Ft. Peta & The Wolves - Think about it

I personally can really relate to what the Thudimentals have said about the song: ”Have you ever felt so lonely that you are sure you are the only person in the world who has ever felt that way? Well the ironic thing is that everyone has felt that same way, it’s just when you are going through those lows, it’s hard to feel anything but alone. We wrote this song to let you know that even when you don’t have anyone around, you’re not alone; you’re just by yourself. We are all connected, even if that connection is hard to see sometimes. This one is dedicated to that person in your life who might be a little hard to read on the outside, but inside they possess a heart of gold. Bless up.”
